Lyon leaves field with hamstring injury on Day 5 in Adelaide

Nathan Lyon, Australia's second-highest Test wicket-taker, left the field at the Adelaide Oval clutching his right hamstring during the first session of Day 5 of the third Ashes Test.

On the final ball of the 77th over, Jamie Smith pulled a delivery towards fine leg. Lyon, stationed there, was late to react. He stopped the ball with a dive but immediately limped off and called for the physio.

Lyon was seen leaving the ground before lunch to go to hospital for a scan. An Australian team spokesperson confirmed he will take no further part in the match.

The injury recalls his calf injury at Lord's in 2023, which ruled the 38-year-old out of the next three Tests of that series.

On Day 2, Lyon had surpassed Glenn McGrath's record of 563 Test wickets with the wickets of Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett in the first innings. He followed that with three crucial middle-order wickets in the second innings. In a spell late on Day 4, he dismissed Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, and Zak Crawley to put Australia in control of the Test.
