Duffy sinks West Indies with another five-wicket haul

Jacob Duffy's five-wicket haul in the second innings gave him career-best match figures of 9 for 128, starring in New Zealand's 323-run victory in the third Test against West Indies to seal the series 2-0. Chasing 462, West Indies were bowled out for 138. Duffy finished with 5 for 42, while Ajaz Patel recorded his best innings and match figures at home (3-23 & 6-136 respectively).

West Indies began the final day intent on batting time. Openers Brandon King and John Campbell showed discipline on a surface with uneven bounce. King was fluent, bringing up a fifty with 10 boundaries. Campbell dug in, surviving an lbw review off Michael Rae. By drinks, West Indies were 74 without loss.

The breakthrough came shortly after. Duffy provided the opening when King, on 67, gloved a short ball. Campbell then struck a lofted four off Ajaz, but miscued a big hit soon after to be caught at mid-on, ending a 105-ball stay. That triggered a rapid slide: Kavem Hodge lobbed a catch to short leg off Ajaz.

The collapse gathered pace. Alick Athanaze edged behind driving loosely, and Justin Greaves nicked off to first slip. From 87 for no loss, West Indies crumbled to 99 for 5 at Lunch.

The partnership between Shai Hope and Roston Chase lasted 52 deliveries for only six runs before Chase gloved a Duffy bouncer to slip. Hope stonewalled for three runs off 78 balls before being trapped lbw by Ajaz via DRS. Glenn Phillips bowled Kemar Roach through the gate. At Tea, West Indies were 138/8.

Anderson Phillip was lbw to Rachin Ravindra early in the final session. Duffy returned with the new ball to bowl Jayden Sealed for a duck, wrapping up the game.

Earlier, Devon Conway (227) and Tom Latham (137) became the only opening pair to score hundreds in both innings of a Test, powering New Zealand to 575/8 declared. In reply, West Indies made 420, with Hodge scoring 123* and King 63. Duffy took four wickets, Ajaz three. New Zealand then raced to 306/2 declared in their second innings, setting a steep target.

Brief scores:
New Zealand 578/8 decl. (Conway 227, Latham 137; Greaves 2-83) & 306/2 decl. (Latham 101, Conway 100; Hodge 2-80)
West Indies 420 (Hodge 123*; Duffy 4-86, Patel 3-113) & 138 (King 67; Duffy 5-42, Patel 3-23)
