Duan Jansen gives Joburg Super Kings a winning start

A four-wicket haul from Duan Jansen gave Joburg Super Kings a winning start to the SA20 2025-26 season. Despite posting only a par total of 168/6, JSK defended it comfortably to win by 22 runs.

Batting first, they lost Matthew de Villiers and Faf du Plessis early, reduced to 16/2. Rilee Rossouw and Wiaan Mulder revived the innings with vital boundaries. Both batters grew in confidence, taking on the spin duo of Keshav Maharaj and Roston Chase. In a seven-delivery span, they hammered three fours and two sixes, forcing bowling changes.

Well set at 94/2 after 12 overs, JSK lost Rossouw against the run of play before Mulder departed next over after hitting back-to-back sixes. With Donovan Ferreira also falling, the innings derailed before a timely cameo from Akeal Hosein, who plundered successive sixes in the penultimate over, lifted JSK to a competitive total.

After a watchful start, Pretoria Capitals gained momentum when Bryce Parsons cleared the ropes twice in the fourth over and added a boundary next over. Will Smeed rounded off the powerplay with a boundary and two sixes as Capitals reached 48/0 in six overs. The opening stand reached 71 before Hosein provided the breakthrough.

Jansen then capitalized, removing Shai Hope before dismissing the well-set Parsons and new batter Connor Esterhuizen in four balls in one over. Dewald Brevis also failed to fire, as Capitals collapsed from 71/0 to 89/5 quickly.

Only Chase and Maharaj reached double figures thereafter as Capitals wilted. Jansen added another wicket in his final over before Richard Gleeson closed out the game for JSK.

Brief scores: Joburg Super Kings 168/6 in 20 overs (Rilee Rossouw 48, Wiaan Mulder 43; Tymal Mills 2/17) beat Pretoria Capitals 146/9 in 20 overs (Bryce Parsons 41; Duan Jansen 4/23) by 22 runs.
