Head leads Australia's strong reply after Root ton takes England to 384
Joe Root scored his 41st Test century, but Australia ensured England did not secure a commanding position. Travis Head (91*) and Marnus Labuschagne (48) added 105 for the second wicket, with Australia ending Day 2 at 166 for 2, trailing England's 384 by 218 runs. Root's century, his 24th since 2021, brings him level with Ricky Ponting on 41 Test hundreds, behind only Sachin Tendulkar (51) and Jacques Kallis (45).
England resumed at 211 for 3. Scott Boland dismissed Harry Brook for 84 early on, and Mitchell Starc removed Ben Stokes for a duck—Stokes' 14th dismissal to the left-armer. Root progressed steadily while Jamie Smith accelerated, hitting a six off Starc. Root reached his second century of the series amid streaky shots that fell short of slips.
Smith had a reprieve due to a Cameron Green no-ball but fell just before Lunch, caught off Labuschagne's bowling, ending a 94-run stand with Root.
After Lunch, Will Jacks hit a top-edged six, and Root reached 150. Post-drinks, Michael Neser removed Jacks, and Green dismissed Brydon Carse. Neser then took a stunning return catch to dismiss Root and later claimed Josh Tongue, as England lost their last four wickets for nine runs, all out for 384.
Australia's openers, Travis Head and Jake Weatherald, started cautiously before attacking Matthew Potts, who conceded multiple boundaries. They brought up a 50-run stand in the 10th over. Ben Stokes broke through by trapping Weatherald lbw with a full delivery.
Head and Labuschagne then built a dominant 105-run partnership over 20 overs, driving confidently and playing ramp shots. Stokes exchanged words with Labuschagne before the batter fell, caught at gully off an expansive drive. Head moved into the nineties, and nightwatchman Michael Neser survived 15 balls before a slight drizzle ended play.
Brief Scores:
England 384 (Joe Root 160, Harry Brook 84; Michael Neser 4-60, Scott Boland 2-85) lead Australia 166 for 2 (Travis Head 91*, Marnus Labuschagne 48; Ben Stokes 2-30) by 218 runs.
