Shreyas Iyer named Mumbai captain for Vijay Hazare Trophy
Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain of the Mumbai team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, taking over from Shardul Thakur, who is ruled out due to injury.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced Iyer’s appointment for the remaining league matches. His continuation as captain beyond the league stage depends on BCCI fitness clearance for international duty, as he has been named in India’s ODI squad against New Zealand starting January 11.
If Iyer is cleared for international return, the MCA will appoint another captain for the VHT knockouts beginning January 12. MCA secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar stated, “We will take a call once things are clear. Shreyas will lead the team in the remaining two league games.”
Iyer returns to competitive cricket after over three months out following spleen surgery post-injury in October.
Mumbai, currently second in Group C, play Himachal Pradesh on January 6 and Punjab on January 8 in Jaipur.
