Debutant Coles' all-round show powers SEC into SA20 playoffs

All-rounder James Coles starred with both bat and ball as Sunrisers Eastern Cape registered a commanding bonus-point victory over Joburg Super Kings to become the first team to qualify for the playoffs in this edition of the SA20.

Asked to bat first, SEC posted a competitive 178 for 5. Quinton de Kock provided early momentum, scoring a fluent half-century (54 off 37), his third of the season. With SEC well placed at 88 for 1 at the halfway mark, Donovan Ferreira turned the game on its head with two wickets in an over, removing Jordan Hermann and de Kock. That brought debutant Coles to the crease.

Coles and Tristan Stubbs were initially kept quiet, with SEC reaching only 129 for 4 at the end of 16 overs. After the timeout, however, Coles shifted gears decisively. His 29-ball half-century ensured SEC finished strongly.

The task was steep for JSK, with no side having chased a target above 165 at the ground this season. The visitors began brightly, as Rivaldo Moonsamy and James Vince raced to 30 without loss after three overs. Coles then made an immediate impact with the ball, striking with his third delivery to dismiss Moonsamy. Tight spells from Adam Milne and Anrich Nortje followed, leaving JSK on 39 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.

Building on the pressure, Coles struck again to have Vince stumped. Senuran Muthusamy then took control through the middle overs, removing Dian Forrester, Wiaan Mulder and Michael Pepper across two overs to finish with figures of 3 for 26. Sandwiched between his wickets was the run out of Matthew de Villiers.

The fast bowlers then wrapped things up, with Milne, Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje cleaning up the tail as JSK were bowled out for 117 in 18.1 overs.

The victory, their fourth bonus-point win of the season, sent SEC to the top of the table.
