Luke Wright steps down as England's national selector
England men's national selector Luke Wright will step down from his position after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup next month. Wright, appointed in November 2022, will leave after a little over three years, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed.
During his tenure, England had an underwhelming time in ICC tournaments. They failed to reach the World Test Championship final in 2023 and 2025, crashed out in the group stage of the 2023 Cricket World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy, and reached the semi-final of the 2024 T20 World Cup before being beaten by eventual champions India.
Citing time away from his family as the primary reason, Wright said: "It has been a true honour and privilege to serve as an England Men's Selector over the past three years. The role demands significant travel and time away from home and with a young family the time feels right to pass the baton on. I now look forward with real interest and enthusiasm to whatever cricketing roles the future may hold."
ECB Men's managing director Rob Key expressed his gratitude: "I have absolutely loved working with Luke. His contribution to English cricket has been exceptional and I trust his judgement as much as anyone. He has added so much more to this role than just being a selector. I'm very sad to see him go and I wish him and his family all the best for the future."
