Sri Lanka skittled out for 58 by ruthless Australia
Will Bryom ripped through the Sri Lankan line-up with a fifer to set the stage for Australia's thumping 9-wicket win in their last group game. Sri Lanka, who had already secured their qualification to the next round, were bundled out for 58, with only two batters managing double digit scores.
Put in to bat, Sri Lankan openers fell cheaply to Charles Lachmund in the third over, and they were soon reduced to 3 for 3. Australia kept that early momentum going, striking frequently, and ensured that none of the partnerships flourished beyond 12 runs. Kasay Barton also chipped in with a brace as Sri Lanka were bowled out in the penultimate ball of the 19th over.
In response, Australia lost opener Will Malajczuk in the opening over, but Nitesh Samuel and Steven Hogan ensured that was the last of their damages. The duo added an unbeaten stand of 58 to help Australia overhaul the target in only 12 overs.
Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 58 in 18.5 overs (Chamika Heenatigala 14; Will Bryom 5-14, Kasay Barton 2-13) lost to Australia 62/1 in 12 overs (Steven Hogan 28*) by 9 wickets
Bangladesh seal next round spot with comfortable win over USA
Skipper Md Azizul Hakim Tamim's steady 64 helped Bangladesh secure a comfortable 7-wicket win over USA. With this victory, Bangladesh's maiden win of the ongoing World Cup, they sealed a place into the next round while USA's campaign came to an end.
Put in to bat, opener Amrinder Gill and Arjun Mahesh departed early. However Sahil Garg and Utkarsh Srivastava stitched a 51-run stand to steady USA's innings. Three dismissals in quick succession left them reeling at 89 for 5 by the 30th over, but Adnit Jhamb's 69-ball 68* helped USA to a competitive score even as none of the other batters made a significant contribution.
Iqbal Hossain Emon was the pick of the bowlers, striking thrice. His efforts were backed up well by the rest, with Al Fahad, Shahriar Ahmed and Md Rizan Hossan bagging a brace each.
In response, Zawad Abrar provided a brisk start with a 42-ball 47, which included five boundaries and three sixes, in a 77-run opening stand. Even as the openers departed in quick succession, Tamim ensured there was no panic in the chase. Kalam Aleen combined with his captain, and later with Rizan to see the side over the line with 51 balls to spare.
Brief Scores: USA 199 in 50 overs (Adnit Jhamb 68*, Utkarsh Srivastava 39; Iqbal Hossain Emon 3-41, Rizan Hossan 2-27) lost to Bangladesh 201/3 in 41.3 overs (Md Azizul Hakim Tamim 64, Zawad Abrar 47; Ritwik Appidi 1-27) by 7 wickets
