Stubbs, Breetzke help SEC clinch third SA20 title
Sunrisers Eastern Cape claimed their third SA20 title, defeating Pretoria Capitals in a thrilling final at Newlands. Chasing 157, Eastern Cape's Tristan Stubbs (63* off 41) and Matthew Breetzke (68* off 49) guided their team home with an unbroken 114-run partnership off just 64 balls.
The chase was tense, requiring 56 runs from the final four overs after the Capitals' spinners, Keshav Maharaj and Roston Chase, had applied pressure. The 17th over from Lizaad Williams yielded crucial boundaries, shifting momentum. Gideon Peters then conceded 21 runs in the 18th over, including wides and a no-ball, leaving 21 needed from 12 balls.
Lungi Ngidi gave away 12 in the penultimate over, setting up a final over with nine required. Stubbs sealed the victory by hitting Bryce Parsons for consecutive sixes, securing the trophy.
Earlier, Dewald Brevis starred for the Capitals with a magnificent 101 off 56 balls after they were asked to bat. However, Marco Jansen's exceptional bowling (3 for 10 from four overs, including 15 dot balls) restricted the Capitals to 158/7. Anrich Nortje also contributed, conceding just two runs in the final over.
Brevis's century was a lone hand, as the rest of the Capitals' batters managed only 55 runs collectively. His effort included seven sixes, but Jansen's double-wicket maiden in the 19th over curtailed a potentially larger total.
Brief scores:
Pretoria Capitals 158/7 in 20 overs (Dewald Brevis 101; Marco Jansen 3-10) lost to Sunrisers Eastern Cape 162/4 in 19.2 overs (Matthew Breetzke 68*, Tristan Stubbs 63*) by six wickets.
