NZ20 set to be backed as New Zealand's preferred domestic T20 competition

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced preliminary approval for the NZ20, a proposed new franchise-based T20 tournament, as their preferred domestic T20 competition. This move aims to revitalize New Zealand's domestic T20 structure, replacing the long-standing Super Smash, which began in the men's format in 2005/06 and the women's format in 2007/08. The shift will transition from a local association-based competition to a franchise-based format, aligning with global T20 leagues.

NZC board chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon stated that the board considered options between a standalone NZ20 competition and integration into the Australian Big Bash system. After extensive discussion and consultation, including insights from the Deloitte Report, the board concluded that now is the right time to refresh the 21-year-old Super Smash. Next steps involve finalizing terms with NZ20 and seeking support from members.

Key focus areas include support for women's cricket and regional representation. NZC aims to ensure the NZ20 incorporates and supports the women's domestic T20 competition, maintaining prominence consistent with NZC's strategic commitment to women's cricket. Additionally, ensuring regional representation of teams is a priority to allow fans and aspiring cricketers to see their heroes in action, alongside considerations of ownership, control, and equity in the competition.
