No automatic double checks for DRS referrals, BCCI tells IPL teams

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified to IPL teams that there will be no automatic double checks during DRS referrals. A review will be limited to the original point of appeal, with additional checks only if the opposing side reviews within the stipulated time.

For example, if the bowling side reviews for a caught-behind, umpires will not automatically check for a wide. That check will occur only if the batting side opts for a review. As reported by Cricbuzz, BCCI experts used video examples to illustrate these points under the playing conditions.

In one scenario, a bowler appeals for caught-behind, the appeal is denied, and the bowling side reviews. Replays show the ball passing above the bat with no contact. At this point, there is no automatic check for a height wide. It will be reviewed only if the batting side opts for a review within the allowed 15 seconds, with no additional time granted.

BCCI head of match referees Javagal Srinath and umpires head Nitin Menon addressed teams on these protocols during a recent captains' meeting.

Additionally, the BCCI has introduced the following updates to playing conditions for the IPL season:

Innings Timer & 60-Second Clock:

  • The innings timer will be displayed on the linear scoreboard on the third ball and after each over.
  • A 60-second clock will be shown on the big screen after each over.
  • Teams will receive two warnings from umpires if the bowler is not ready to bowl. A third offense will result in a 5-run penalty to the batting side.

Concussion Replacements:

  • A like-for-like replacement may be taken from nominated substitutes.
  • If a wicketkeeper suffers a concussion, a replacement can come from the available squad.
  • If an overseas player has a concussion and the team already has four overseas players in the XI, the replacement must come from nominated Indian substitute players.

Team Sheets:

  • Team sheets will be distributed after the toss.
  • Captains will carry one sheet each for batting and bowling sides.
  • After the toss, captains submit the team sheet to the match referee.
  • Both team managers exchange sheets and provide the remaining copies to the Assistant Venue Manager.
