Santner returns as MI look to tame Delhi's flat deck

Brimming with confidence after a record chase to kick off their IPL campaign, Mumbai Indians have received another timely boost. Mitchell Santner has rejoined the squad after an extended personal break and looks set to walk back into the XI as MI face Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the season's first afternoon fixture.

A 200-plus vs 200-plus game on a ground with short boundaries often offers little margin for the bowlers, and Delhi is unlikely to be any more forgiving. The venue has consistently ranked among the most batting-friendly conditions, putting an even greater premium on control through the middle overs. That's where MI would hope Santner's return could prove pivotal.

Now retired from T20Is, Rohit Sharma rolled back the years, stitching a commanding 148-run opening stand with Ryan Rickelton. The ease of that chase underlined the depth and form of Mumbai's batting. At this early stage, Suryakumar Yadav's fitness remains the only lingering concern in an otherwise settled line-up.

Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, arrive home with questions despite opening their account with an eventually comfortable win in Lucknow. The nervy chase once again exposed their long-standing top-order inconsistencies. After combing through multiple opening combinations last season, DC found themselves reeling at 26/4 inside five overs in pursuit of a modest 142.

Sameer Rizvi, coming in as the Impact Sub and sent ahead of the experienced David Miller, played a crucial rescue act to steer Delhi clear of embarrassment. Mitchell Starc's absence wasn't felt, with Lungi Ngidi stepping up impressively and the Axar Patel-Kuldeep Yadav duo applying a familiar spin choke through the middle overs.

With both sides carrying momentum—but also clear areas to tighten—this clash could hinge on which team adapts quicker to Delhi's run-heavy conditions. At a venue that promises little respite, expect another high-scoring duel where control, and not just firepower, might ultimately decide who comes out on top.

When: Saturday, April 4 at 3:30 PM IST

Where: Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi

What to expect: Some of the flattest wickets and uneven boundary sizes for the venue's opening game of the season. Delhi has been surprisingly pleasant this past week, with a minuscule chance of rain forecast around match-start.

Head to Head: Overall, Mumbai lead 21-16 in their 37-match rivalry with Delhi. In Delhi, the hosts have had a slight edge with a record of 7-6 in 13 games. However, MI have a strong 4-1 record against DC since 2023.

Injuries/Unavailability: Barring the already known unavailability of Mitchell Starc, Delhi don't have any concerns on this front.

Tactics & Match-ups: No batter in the IPL has scored three or more centuries against a single opponent more often than KL Rahul has against the Mumbai Indians. After struggling for a solid opening platform, Delhi will be hoping their senior batter can translate his strong first-class form into T20 success, especially against the opponent that seems to bring out the very best in him.

Probable XII: KL Rahul (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Nitish Rana, Sameer Rizvi, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Axar Patel (C), Vipraj Nigam, Lungi Ngidi, Kuldeep Yadav, T Natarajan, Mukesh Kumar

Injuries/Unavailability: After a batting stint early in the pre-match training session, Suryakumar Yadav also underwent fitness/running drills after complaining of a groin strain in MI's tournament opener. Mitchell Santner, who has linked up with the team in Delhi, batted and bowled both in the nets on match eve.

Tactics & Matchups: Ryan Rickelton boasts an eye-catching strike rate of 203.7 against compatriot Lungi Ngidi, who leads Delhi Capitals' pace attack in the absence of Mitchell Starc. Notably, he has remained unbeaten against Ngidi across five T20 encounters. Alongside him, Rohit Sharma will be crucial on the typically placid Kotla surface.

Probable XII: Ryan Rickleton (wk), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (C), Naman Dhir, Sherfane Rutherford, Mitchell Santner/AM Ghazanfar, Shardul Thakur, Mayank Markande, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah

Stats:

  • The average first innings score in Delhi since IPL 2024 is 217 (12 matches)—the highest among all venues.
  • No other batter has more runs in death overs (16-20) than Tristan Stubbs' tally of 430 since IPL 2024. His strike-rate of 227.51 and boundary-percentage of 33.85 is best among the top-five in the list.
  • Mitchell Santner bagged 2/43 and 3/11 in his two outings versus DC last year.

Quotes:

"Credit to him. He had a plan… It was a good start for him in the first game and hopefully he can continue that. I know it's been tough, but he's focused, he's relaxed, and he's contributing in a very positive way, which is great for us." — MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene on Rohit Sharma's preparation.

"It's very important for spinners to back their strengths… If you are an attacking spinner, don't let that go. Because that is your identity and if you are taking wickets while doing that work for the team, there can be nothing better." — DC's Kuldeep Yadav on how to prosper as a bowler in increasingly batting-friendly conditions.
