Talking points: CSK's new spin twins, the cat and mouse game with Narine

Chennai Super Kings secured their second consecutive win, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders at Chepauk. KKR remain the only winless team in IPL 2026.

Historically, CSK have relied on spin duos at Chepauk. While recent years suggested that era was over, Tuesday offered a throwback. It is rare for a team to field two overseas frontline spinners, let alone two left-arm overseas spinners. CSK have unleashed Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad in their last two games—both victories.

One is adept in the Powerplay, the other a wicket-taker in the middle overs. After a poor start, Noor Ahmad was at his best, running through KKR to finish with a three-wicket haul, while Akeal Hosein took 1/26. Assistant bowling coach Sridharan Sriram credited Hosein for Noor's success: "Akeal was the one who went and told Noor about the exact length, the in-between length that he needed to bowl. Once he found that in-between length, I think Noor was relatively unplayable."

The cat-and-mouse game around Hosein's role was fascinating. Expecting CSK to bring on Hosein as the Impact Sub again, KKR promoted Sunil Narine to open, aiming to disrupt CSK's plans with a left-hander against the right-hand-heavy top order.

There was brief confusion post-innings when Matt Henry, not Hosein, emerged in full kit for a fan activity. Hosein eventually appeared, but with Narine opening, CSK started with pace. After a few misses, connections, a dropped catch, and a couple of sixes, CSK held firm. They only introduced Hosein after Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Narine in the fifth over. There are no prizes for guessing who bowled the next over.

Gaikwad's never-ending woes

Despite CSK entering on a win, pressure mounted on skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad to deliver with the bat after a poor start to the season regarding strike rate. He attempted to force the pace from the start but fell for 7 (6), finding a fielder in the deep.

Calls for him to swap batting positions with Ayush Mhatre grew louder as the young teammate produced a sizzling Powerplay display after Gaikwad's dismissal. To compound matters, Gaikwad dropped a simple catch, though it fortunately did not cost CSK.

Finn Allen's struggles continue

Another day, another disappointing outing for Finn Allen. He started the season with bright cameos, but as a specialist opener, KKR expect more, especially after his strong T20 World Cup and BBL performances.

Allen has failed to make an impact in the last three games, registering single-digit scores. How long can KKR persist, given their winless start? Tim Seifert—one of Allen's close mates—is waiting in the wings. Seifert also enjoyed a strong T20 World Cup, even outscoring Allen, and his game against spin has improved. With Cameron Green also struggling, Seifert may not have to wait long.

A silver lining: Kartik Tyagi

Was it all doom and gloom for KKR? Probably not. Their bowling injuries to Harshit Rana and Matheesha Pathirana are well-documented, but Kartik Tyagi's performance offers hope.

Tyagi was excellent, at times unplayable. He used off-cutter bouncers effectively and mixed in serious pace, clocking nearly 150 km/h repeatedly. One delivery jagged back to beat the in-form Sanju Samson. Dewald Brevis was roughed up early and, though he recovered, it was Tyagi who dismissed him.

The 25-year-old burst onto the scene in IPL 2020. While his career stalled thereafter, Tyagi finally appears to be turning a corner, nailing down a permanent spot for now.
