Chloe Tryon, openers hand 2-0 lead to South Africa

A clinical all-round performance, led by three-wicket hauls from Chloe Tryon and Tumi Sekhukhune, followed by half-centuries from Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus powered South Africa to a comfortable eight-wicket win in the second T20I against India in Durban. Having restricted India to 147, South Africa took only 17.1 overs to reach the target, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.

South Africa effectively sealed the chase in the first half of their reply as Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus combined for a blistering 106-run stand in only 73 deliveries. Boundaries flowed from both ends while Luus also struck a six off Shreyanka Patil as South Africa raced to 66/0 in the Powerplay. All of India's bowlers in the first six overs went for runs as Wolvaardt and Luus took control.

Even after the fielding restrictions were lifted, South Africa's momentum did not cease. Wolvaardt brought up a 30-ball fifty, and the openers took the partnership past 100 before India finally picked up a wicket, with Wolvaardt finding long-on off Shreyanka. A 41-ball fifty for Luus came soon after, and Tazmin Britts also started well, taking South Africa to 123/1 after 15 overs.

Luus' outing ended when she fell to Shreyanka trying to sweep, but she had done plenty of damage by then, along with Wolvaardt, allowing Britts and Annerie Dercksen to get the remaining runs without any fuss.

Earlier, after being asked to bat, India's innings was built on early momentum before unravelling sharply at the death. Shafali Verma set the tone from the outset, racing to a 31-ball fifty in her 100th T20I outing. Anushka Sharma complemented her well as India moved to 78/2 at the halfway mark.

The stand between Shafali and Anushka provided stability, but it also masked the shift in control that South Africa gradually engineered through spin. Tryon's double strike inside the Powerplay, dismissing Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, kept India from breaking away completely. Shafali's dismissal in the 14th over marked a turning point, with Anushka also having been dismissed an over earlier by Tryon who finished with 3 for 22.

The collapse thereafter was swift and sustained as India's middle order struggled to adapt. Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh fell cheaply, while Harmanpreet Kaur's brief stay ended in a run-out. The lower order offered fleeting resistance, but the innings never recovered its earlier fluency. India lost their last eight wickets for 48 runs, eventually being bowled out for what felt like an underwhelming total.

Brief scores: India 147 in 20 overs (Shafali Verma 57, Anushka Sharma 28; Chloe Tryon 3-22, Tumi Sekhukhune 3-31) lost to South Africa 148/2 in 17.1 overs (Sune Luus 57, Laura Wolvaardt 54; Shreyanka Patil 2-35) by 8 wickets.
