MI search for answers as GT look to build on winning momentum
Problems have taken up permanent residence in the Mumbai Indians camp. A dysfunctional middle order, a premier bowler in a protracted dry spell, new-ball specialists who have lost their fizz, spinners who are not Indian—a rarity in the IPL—and an experienced opener who is doubtful. No wonder MI are standing on quicksand at the bottom of the points table.
They won't admit it, but it's panic stations. Time may be fast running out with just one win from five games. Voices in the dressing room cite 2014, when they made the playoffs after losing their first five, and 2015, when they won the title after losing five of their first six, but that stretches optimism.
Skipper Hardik Pandya called for tough decisions after the previous loss. Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey said, "I'll leave that conversation to the head coach and Hardik… we're the only ones who can work together and get ourselves out of it."
Gujarat Titans are coming off three consecutive wins and boast a 100% record against MI at home—4-0 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. But given their pedigree, MI remain one of the most feared sides, and if any team can pull off a turnaround, it is them. GT management is well aware of the potential dangers.
GT assistant coach Parthiv Patel said, "We've seen many times that Mumbai Indians have the ability to make a comeback… But those things don't matter as much at this point—we need to focus on what we can do."
For GT, bowling has rarely been an issue, with Ashok Sharma boosting the pace attack. Batting, however, has been hit and miss, largely reliant on the top three. Shubman Gill (251 runs) and Jos Buttler (201 runs) have fired, but last year's Orange Cap holder Sai Sudharsan has struggled for rhythm. GT will need him, along with Washington Sundar and Glenn Phillips, to contribute consistently.
