Priyansh-Connolly fireworks keep PBKS unbeaten after run-fest

Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly's brutal 182-run partnership powered Punjab Kings to a commanding 54-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants at home on Sunday (April 19), strengthening their grip on the top spot in the IPL 2026 standings.

The second-wicket duo fell short of the centuries they once seemed destined for, but their onslaught had effectively taken the game away from LSG even before the chase began. Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant, and Aiden Markram offered brief resistance, but LSG lacked the collective effort required to pull off a record chase, ultimately slumping to their third consecutive defeat.

Phase PBKS LSG Run-rate (PBKS – LSG) 4s/6s (PBKS – LSG)
Powerplay 63 for 1 61 for 1 10.5 – 10.16 6/4 – 8/2
Middle Overs 130 for 2 81 for 3 14.44 – 9 6/12 – 2/5
Death Overs 61 for 4 58 for 1 12.20 – 11.60 4/5 – 4/4

Brief scores: Punjab Kings 254/7 in 20 overs (Priyansh Arya 93 off 37, Cooper Connolly 87 off 46; Prince Yadav 2-25) beat Lucknow Super Giants 200/5 in 20 overs (Rishabh Pant 43 off 23, Aiden Markram 42 off 22, Mitch Marsh 40 off 28; Marco Jansen 2-37) by 54 runs.

Punjab responded to the early loss of Prabhsimran Singh with a blistering 182-run stand for the second wicket. Arya and Connolly attacked every corner of the ground during their 80-ball association. Connolly's 87 off 46 came at a slower pace than his partner. He crawled to 15 off his first 20 deliveries before exploding, smashing 72 off his next 26 balls. Arya was the chief aggressor, tearing his way to 93 off just 37 balls, including a record nine sixes.

The carnage peaked in a 32-run over off Aiden Markram, where the duo launched five maximums. Both batters looked set for centuries, and PBKS seemed on course for a rare 300-plus total, having surged to 185/1 by the 14th over.

How did LSG restrict them to 254 then?

When the wickets fell, they tumbled in a heap. Prince Yadav provided the breakthrough by dismissing Connolly, and Arya and skipper Shreyas Iyer followed in quick succession. 185/1 quickly became 208/5. Marcus Stoinis (29 off 16) and Shashank Singh (17 off 6) then injected late momentum with a brisk 44-run stand, ensuring the innings still finished past 250.

LSG promoted Ayush Badoni to open. He struggled initially but the new pair quickly got a move on in the Powerplay. Vijaykumar Vyshak eventually dismissed Badoni for 35 off 21.

The LSG skipper got going with a couple of maximums. The Pant and Marsh pair initially kept up momentum, adding 48 runs. But a slowdown came with Vyshak and Yuzvendra Chahal's miserly overs in the middle, pushing the asking rate past 15. That pressure resulted in Marsh's wicket to Chahal. Pant counter-attacked with back-to-back sixes, but Arshdeep Singh ended his innings. The skipper made 43 off 23.

Easy win for Punjab then?

Big win, but LSG fought till the end to at least ensure their Net Run Rate didn't take a massive hit. Aiden Markram and Mukul Choudhary sent a few to the fence. Xavier Bartlett came under fire, with Markram hacking two sixes and two boundaries in his final couple of overs.

Punjab have six days before they take the field again. They're off to Delhi for next week's Saturday double-header. LSG head back home where they'll take on Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday (April 22).
