PBKS eye ascent as Dharamsala leg begins

The IPL's May checklist often includes rain delays, top teams slipping, and bottom teams rising. Another familiar presence is the move to the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, set against the Himalayan backdrop.

Adapting to a second 'home' ground at a critical campaign juncture isn't easy. Rajasthan Royals have gone winless at their primary home this season in three attempts. For Punjab Kings, the shift to Dharamsala comes after three straight defeats, belying their strong first half.

Batting has been solid, except against Gujarat Titans when they lost early wickets. Teams have targeted Priyansh Arya with short balls. Cooper Connolly's century against Sunrisers Hyderabad highlighted his impressive debut IPL stint, while Suryansh Shedge has shown promise.

Bowling is PBKS's bigger concern. Dropped catches haven't helped, and spearheads Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh are out of form on a Dharamsala surface that aids run-scoring.

Up first are Delhi Capitals, whom PBKS chased down 265 against earlier this season. DC's promising start is a distant memory. With a maximum of 14 points available and a poor net run-rate, Axar Patel hinted at giving bench players a go with next season in mind. A team with nothing to lose can be dangerous for PBKS.

When: Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals, Match 55 – Monday, May 11 at 7:30 PM IST

Where: HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala

What to expect: Cool day with possible thunderstorms. Average first innings score at the venue since IPL 2023 is 209 – the best among 14 venues used, though sample size is just five matches.

Head to Head: PBKS lead 18-17 overall, 3-2 since 2023. In Dharamsala, it's 2-2.

Injuries/Unavailability: Azmatullah Omarzai is available after returning home following his mother's death.

Tactics & Matchups: Vijaykumar Vyshak is the only PBKS seamer going under 10 per over. Harpreet Brar could be recalled for Powerplay bowling against Pathum Nissanka, who struggles against spin (SR 127.5 in T20s since 2025). James Hopes suggested Omarzai's return offers the option of playing two spinners.

Probable XII: Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (c), Suryansh Shedge, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, Marco Jansen, Harpreet Brar/Vijaykumar Vyshak, Lockie Ferguson, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal

DC has no injury concerns.

Tactics & Matchups: Axar has dismissed Stoinis four times in T20s, with Stoinis striking at 69.23. Axar may hold an over for Stoinis's entry. Kuldeep Yadav's poor form could see him sit out, opening the door for extra seamer Auqib Nabi or spin-bowling all-rounder Ajay Mandal.

Probable XII: Pathum Nissanka, KL Rahul (wk), Nitish Rana, Sameer Rizvi, Axar Patel (c), Tristan Stubbs, Ashutosh Sharma, Vipraj Nigam, Ajay Mandal/Auqib Nabi, Mitchell Starc, Lungi Ngidi, Mukesh Kumar

  • The team batting first has won four of five IPL matches in Dharamsala since 2023.
  • Among batters with the best strike-rate in overs 16-20 since IPL 2023 (min. 150 balls), the top three spots are held by PBKS players: Stoinis, Shreyas Iyer, and Shashank Singh.

"The bowlers have had to work hard and the batsmen have had to work hard also because they understand that 240 is what they need to get. I think tomorrow night you can expect fast starts in the Powerplay, teams working their way back in the middle overs, and execution at the end will come down to which team does that best." – James Hopes, PBKS fast bowling coach

"It's been inconsistent. We had a few games where we had opportunities, and when you play in the IPL against world-class players, you have to take those moments, and we probably haven't done that ruthlessly enough." – Ian Bell, Delhi Capitals assistant coach
