CSK's playoff push rolls into Lucknow amid injury chaos

The narrative around Chennai Super Kings has revolved around boarding gates. CSK confirmed MS Dhoni had been booked to travel to Lucknow, briefly raising hopes of a return from his calf injury. He never boarded the flight.

Jamie Overton did travel—back to the UK—as a thigh injury has ruled him out of IPL 2026. For a side still in the playoff race (a win could push them into the top-four for the first time this season), the timing is brutal.

Two ways to view CSK's campaign: admire their resilience despite repeated setbacks, or question whether this was bad luck or poor management. Those questions can wait. There's a season to salvage.

Without Overton, Spencer Johnson could return. CSK will hope individual contributors keep stepping up—Urvil Patel did last game, and Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube are due.

LSG have fewer dilemmas, already out of contention. But for players fighting for retention, these games still matter. Rishabh Pant and Justin Langer will expect urgency.

When: LSG vs CSK, IPL 2026, May 15 at 19:30 IST
Where: BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow
What to expect: Mid-30s temperatures, no rain. After low-scoring games, the last contest here (LSG vs RCB) saw 400+ runs in 38 overs.
Table Watch: CSK can go past SRH if they win by 37+ runs or chase in 16 overs or fewer (assuming a 170 target—avg 1st innings score here is 166).
Head to Head: LSG 3-3 CSK. CSK have won the last two, including the reverse fixture at Chepauk.
Injuries: Mohsin Khan unavailable. MS Dhoni unavailable. Jamie Overton ruled out, replaced by Dian Forrester.

Key matchup: Shahbaz Ahmed has dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad three times in five T20 meetings.

Probable XII (LSG): Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant (c&wk), Aiden Markram, Akshat Raghuwanshi, Shahbaz Ahmed, Himmat Singh, Mohammed Shami, Avesh Khan/Mayank Yadav, Digvesh Rathi, Prince Yadav

Key matchup: Mitchell Marsh struck a ton against RCB here last game. Akeal Hosein has dismissed him twice, conceding 61 off 52 balls in T20s.

Probable XII (CSK): Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Urvil Patel, Kartik Sharma, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Akeal Hosein, Prashant Veer, Anshul Kamboj, Noor Ahmad, Mukesh Choudhary, Spencer Johnson

Notable stats

  • Josh Inglis is one of two players to strike at 200+ in the Powerplay in the IPL since 2025 (min. 100 balls faced). The other is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
  • Rishabh Pant averages 45.3 against CSK, scoring 453 runs at a SR of 151.
  • Urvil Patel's strike-rate of 232.43 is the highest among Indian batters in Men's T20s since 2024 (min. 500 runs).

Quote: "We worked on quite a few areas in the break and I think it came off really well. Still three games to go, but it is just about keeping it simple for as long as possible." – Ruturaj Gaikwad
