Vijay Shankar retires from domestic cricket and IPL

All-rounder Vijay Shankar has announced his retirement from domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League. In a message on Instagram, Vijay said: "I have decided to retire from playing domestic cricket and IPL to pursue new opportunities and play more cricket."

Vijay debuted for Tamil Nadu in 2012, playing 13 seasons before switching to Tripura for 2025-26. He finishes with 77 first-class matches (4,253 runs, 43 wickets), 112 List A games (2,790 runs, 73 wickets), and 159 T20s (2,583 runs, 38 wickets).

His IPL career began with CSK in 2013, followed by stints with SRH, DC, Gujarat Titans, and a return to CSK in 2025. His best season came in 2023, scoring 301 runs at a strike rate of 160.10.

Vijay played 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is for India in 2018-19, including selection for the 2019 ODI World Cup. He dismissed Imam-ul-Haq with his first ball in the tournament against Pakistan after replacing Bhuvneshwar Kumar mid-over.

"Thankful to BCCI and the Indian Cricket Team. Representing the country will be my highest badge of honour. Bowling the last over at India's 500th ODI at Nagpur and my first ball first wicket at the 2019 World Cup are moments I will hold onto forever," he wrote.

Vijay also defended 11 runs off the final over against Australia in Nagpur to secure India's 500th ODI victory.

He thanked his coaches and teammates, adding: "I have faced unreal hate and negativity. I chose to ignore and move forward. Cricket has taught me life. Cricket is my life."
