Data Shorts: Mumbai Indians' Missing Production Line
Mumbai Indians finished bottom of the table for the third time in five seasons, a steep fall for a five-time IPL champion. A major reason: underperformance and underutilization of their uncapped talent.
Since 2025, MI's uncapped batters have scored just 608 runs collectively (570 from Naman Dhir alone). Their uncapped bowlers have taken 27 wickets (17 from Ashwani Kumar). Only Gujarat Titans trail them in both categories.
The Pattern: Several uncapped players who struggled at MI have thrived elsewhere – Mohsin Khan, Ramandeep Singh, Nehal Wadhera, Arshad Khan, Anshul Kamboj.
Recent Examples: Robin Minz and Danish Malewar combined for 8 runs in 4 innings in 2026. Krish Bhagat, Raj Bawa and Raghu Sharma took 3 wickets across 12 appearances combined. Impact Player usage has been confusing – Mayank Rawat never batted or bowled; Raghu Sharma was brought in but didn't bowl during a chase.
Stark Contrast: Since 2022, only one uncapped MI player (Tilak Varma) has debuted for India. Previously, 21 uncapped India debutants had represented MI – 12 were with the franchise at the time of their national call-up.
Context: At the 2025 auction, MI targeted emerging domestic names (Priyansh Arya, Suyash Sharma, Vipraj Nigam, others) but lost out due to budget constraints from retaining established stars.
Rebuilding the talent pipeline may be the most important pathway back to success.
