Course-corrected RR thrown a first-blink challenge against SRH

Let's circle back to about 10 days ago, when Riyan Parag borrowed the angst of every discontented parent watching their kid flunk test after test. "If we keep playing like this, we shouldn't be in contention for the top four," he bluntly declared after Rajasthan Royals's third straight loss. This IPL has seen too many teensy cracks turn into glacial crevasses. Placed sixth at that point, RR ran the grave risk of sinking into a quagmire at the worst possible time.

But they prevailed, lapping up two timely wins against the two worst teams of this season. They might feel like the weakest link in the top four and have a skewed track record staring at them: in the 15 years since the format was introduced, only one team has won the IPL after featuring in the Eliminator.

That team was Sunrisers Hyderabad, victors in 2016, and RR's opponents in Mullanpur. SRH would hope "2026 is the new 2016" isn't merely a social media catchphrase. Barring a penultimate ball finish against Lucknow Super Giants, none of their other four defeats have come through close margins. On their bad days, they have been comfortably outmatched. And for a team whose biggest strength is their batting, their 86 all out against Gujarat Titans was ultimately the minute net run-rate difference that saw them miss out on the top two spot. If it matters, they are on a six-match winning streak against RR since 2022.

When: SRH vs RR, Eliminator, May 27 at 19:30 IST

Where: Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, New Chandigarh

What to expect: To start with, temperatures in the city – as is the case across the North India belt – have been extremely high, staying over 40 degrees even past 5pm. Sunrisers Hyderabad assistant coach James Franklin said Pitch 4 will be used. In their previous game against PBKS on the same pitch, they posted 219, which Punjab chased down easily. On a venue where the drop-off in scoring rate after the Powerplay is significant, the average first innings total at the venue is 214, with Punjab even crossing 250 against LSG in a league game. In four games this year, spinners enjoy a better economy rate of 9.29, compared to pace (11.06).

Head-to-head: SRH 14-9 RR

Injuries/Availability: At the press conference, Dasun Shanaka reiterated that Riyan Parag and Ravindra Jadeja have "a few niggles", but remained coy, saying "hopefully they will be fine". Towards the end of training, Jadeja took on gentle throwdowns with one pad on, having bowled casually with a couple of paces on-and-off earlier. In case he doesn't make it, RR could bring in Ravi Bishnoi, who bowled a long spell the previous evening. As an added seam option, they also have Sandeep Sharma. Parag was a distant observer, not padding up at all, but he'll likely power through, as he indicated after the MI game.

Tactics & Matchups: Travis Head versus Jofra Archer is a contest of fire and ice: in all T20s, Head has struck at 160.6 against the speedster but has also been dismissed thrice in 33 balls. Archer is currently in the midst of his best-ever IPL season and has a strike-rate of 14.8 in Powerplays. Head's last three scores read: 0, 6 and 26: trust Archer to stifle him with little room and the surprise bumper. When asked if there's any concern on Head's form, given his lofty standards, assistant coach James Franklin said that the team was looking more at the partnerships him and Abhishek Sharma are putting together. He also pointed that Head has around 400 runs (393), which is a "pretty good IPL".

Probable XII: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Riyan Parag (c), Dasun Shanaka, Donovan Ferreira, Jofra Archer, Shubham Dubey, Ravindra Jadeja/Ravi Bishnoi, Nandre Burger, Yash Raj Punja, Brijesh Sharma

Injuries/Availability: No known injuries in the SRH camp.

Tactics & Matchups: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi already has a century against SRH this season: naturally, all eyes would be on how he's restricted. Pat Cummins only bowled four balls to him during that knock, but it would make for an intriguing battle if the faceoff lasts longer this time. Cummins, meanwhile, has dismissed Riyan Parag thrice in 14 balls (he averages 4.66 against the quick in T20s). Going purely by numbers, SRH would also be tempted to bring in Harshal Patel over Praful Hinge, like they did against RCB. Harshal has 23 wickets at 16.3 against RR. At Mullanpur, he has 11 wickets at 16.63. He, too, had dismissed Parag thrice.

Probable XII: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan (wk), Heinrich Klaasen, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Salil Arora, Smaran Ravichandran, Pat Cummins (c), Shivang Kumar, Harshal Patel/Praful Hinge, Eshan Malinga, Sakib Hussain

  • Ishan Kishan averages 51.33 from five Playoff matches, striking at 130.5
  • RR and SRH are almost neck-and-neck in Powerplay scoring (run-rates of 11.54 vs 11.02 respectively this year)
  • Six out of eight team totals at Mullanpur have been 200+ scores

"His role has obviously been slightly deeper this year as opposed to last year as well sort of more coming in with maybe say six or seven overs to go at No.5 or No.6 and he's played some unbelievable cameos for us in finishing off innings and his bowling as well. He's been utilised opening the bowling, he's been utilised in the middle just again depending on what we foresee being the best match-up for him to enter the game and obviously Pat being the captain out there at the time" – James Franklin lauded Nitish Reddy for really "bouncing back" from the struggles of his last season.

"Riyan, of course is a very good captain. He sticks to his decisions. That's what is important. Many people criticise, but I feel (see) him as a great leader in the making. He can be a really good leader for Rajasthan and for Indian cricket as well" – Dasun Shanaka on Riyan Parag, the captain.
