Washington Freedom: Ponting's Men Seek Another Title Run

Few franchises in the transient world of franchise T20 cricket manage to forge a genuine emotional connection with their players and supporters. Washington Freedom have become something more than just another franchise.

After last season's final, as MI New York celebrated an improbable championship, cameras caught Ricky Ponting's young children in tears after watching Freedom fall agonisingly short.

The pain was understandable. Having won eight of ten league matches, Freedom entered the final as overwhelming favourites. For much of the chase they appeared firmly in control before Rushil Ugarkar produced one of the defining overs in MLC history, defending 12 runs in the final over against Glenn Maxwell and Glenn Phillips.

It was a cruel ending for a side that had spent much of the season looking like the most complete team. Freedom remain one of only two franchises to have lifted the MLC trophy.

Unlike many franchises, Washington Freedom have not been forced into a major rebuild. More than 90 percent of their overseas and domestic core remains intact, reflecting Ricky Ponting's influence and an ownership group that has fostered one of the most respected cultures in the tournament.

Steve Smith returns to lead Washington Freedom after missing last season due to Test commitments. He guided the franchise to its maiden MLC title in 2024 and has enjoyed an excellent year in T20 cricket.

Glenn Maxwell is another to watch. Outside his magnificent century against Los Angeles Knight Riders last season, he has struggled in T20 cricket, enduring a terrible IPL 2025 and a subdued PSL campaign. At 37, questions arise about how much elite cricket remains, but few players can alter a tournament quite like Maxwell when confidence and rhythm align.

Mitch Owen and Mark Chapman return to provide further firepower. To strengthen the pace attack, Washington have added Marco Jansen, whose stock has risen considerably over the past two years. Partnering Lockie Ferguson, Jansen provides wicket-taking ability and valuable lower-order runs.

Washington Freedom possess the deepest domestic group in MLC. At the forefront is Andries Gous, arguably the premier T20 batter in American cricket. Former Pakistan international Mukhtar Ahmed often bats as low as number seven despite being a specialist top-order batter. Obus Pienaar remains one of the most accomplished finishers in American domestic cricket. Saurabh Netravalkar continues to make himself one of the most valuable domestic players in the league.
