Scotland rout Ireland for maiden T20 World Cup win

Scotland registered their first Women's T20 World Cup win with a thumping 40-run victory over Ireland in the opening Group B fixture in Manchester on Saturday. A defining 106-run stand between Kathryn and Sarah Bryce helped Scotland post a competitive total before Kirstie Gordon's and Katherine Fraser's three-wicket hauls dismantled Ireland's batting order.

Scotland were asked to bat first on an overcast and chilly morning at Old Trafford. The rain-soaked outfield was predictably slow and, with the Scottish openers struggling to middle the ball early, they were made to work hard for their runs. Both openers received early reprieves but failed to capitalise, falling in successive overs inside the Powerplay as Scotland slipped to 37/2.

The Bryce sisters then came together and accelerated after a brief period of consolidation. There was a noticeable increase in tempo after the halfway mark, with Sarah Bryce taking 20 runs off a Cara Murray over. The partnership crossed three figures and carried Scotland into a position of strength at 142/2 after 16 overs.

Ireland, however, struck back by picking up wickets at the death. Sarah Bryce was the first to fall, one run short of her fifty, in the 17th over. Ava Canning then dismissed both Ailsa Lister and Kathryn Bryce in the 19th over to further stifle Scotland. No boundaries were scored in the final four overs as Scotland finished with 161/5.

Having top-scored with the bat, captain Kathryn Bryce dented Ireland's chase early by holding on to a sharp return catch to dismiss Alana Dalzell in the opening over. Gaby Lewis counterattacked by hitting Gabriella Fontenla for three boundaries in the fourth over, but Ireland could muster only 31/1 in the Powerplay.

Scotland continued to build pressure and were rewarded when Lewis was stumped off Fraser in the eighth over. Amy Hunter and Orla Prendergast then combined for a 30-run stand to keep Ireland in the hunt, but Fraser returned to dismiss Hunter in the 12th over. That wicket triggered a collapse, with Gordon, back in Scottish colours and playing her first international since 2018, picking up three wickets in the next over.

There was a semblance of a recovery as Prendergast and Arlene Kelly put on a brisk 38-run stand, but a misjudged second run cost Prendergast her wicket in the 17th over. Kelly was run out in the following over while attempting a similar second run. Ireland were eventually bowled out for 121 in the final over.

Scotland face West Indies next on June 18 in Leeds, while Ireland take on hosts England on June 16 in Southampton.

Brief Scores: Scotland 161/5 in 20 overs (Kathryn Bryce 60, Sarah Bryce 49; Ava Canning 3-27) beat Ireland 121 all out (Amy Hunter 39, Orla Prendergast 33; Kirstie Gordon 3-16, Katherine Fraser 3-18) by 40 runs
