Ireland's urgency meets daunting England challenge

England and Ireland share a lot in common yet are worlds apart in the cricketing landscape. England's women boast a 100% championship record across home World Cups, while Ireland are yet to win a T20 World Cup game in 18 attempts. England entered this edition peaking at the right time; Ireland always had a bridge too far in the marquee event.

The contrasts carried into their openers. England hammered Sri Lanka after posting a record T20 World Cup total. Ireland went down to Scotland, never looking the part in a chase of 162.

Ireland's campaign has entered a tipping point as they face Group B favourites England on Tuesday. There were positives with their Powerplay and death bowling – they conceded 19/3 in the final four overs – but they cannot afford to let England off the hook like the Bryce sisters did for Scotland.

Ireland have fond memories of their last T20I against England, scripting a famous win in 2024. However, only one member of that second-choice England XI, Issy Wong, is in the current setup.

When: Tuesday, June 16, 2026, 6:30 PM Local/11 PM IST

Where: England vs Ireland, Match 8, The Rose Bowl, Southampton

What to expect: A pleasant day with clear skies. Run-scoring hasn't been easy in the Powerplay (just over 7 per over in 12 women's T20s since 2025). Pacers and spinners have had equal success at The Rose Bowl, though quicks strike once every 17.8 deliveries compared to 20.8 for spinners.

England: Sciver-Brunt continues as a specialist batter but England have a fully fit squad. Opening concerns vanished after Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Amy Jones' 135-run stand against Sri Lanka, with the former scoring a hundred. Rotating bowlers or bringing in Tilly Corteen-Coleman is unlikely after a clinical first game.

Probable XI: Amy Jones (wk), Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Nat Sciver-Brunt (c), Alice Capsey, Heather Knight, Freya Kemp, Danielle Gibson, Charlotte Dean, Sophie Ecclestone, Linsey Smith, Lauren Bell

Ireland: Gaby Lewis' return from injury hasn't begun well (5 and 8 in warmups, 19-ball 11 vs Scotland). Opener Alana Dalzell has 14 runs and four ducks across her last six outings, but her all-round presence is crucial for balance. How Ireland tackle Lauren Bell's control could decide their fate as they look to reduce dependency on Orla Prendergast.

Probable XI: Amy Hunter (wk), Alana Dalzell, Gaby Lewis (c), Orla Prendergast, Rebecca Stokell, Leah Paul, Alice Tector, Arlene Kelly, Ava Canning, Cara Murray, Aimee Maguire

  • England beat Ireland by 4 wickets in a low-scorer at the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup.
  • Danni Wyatt-Hodge has 1052 runs in 36 T20 innings at The Rose Bowl, averaging 30.94 with a strike-rate of 142.93.
  • Teams batting first have won 7 of 12 games at the Rose Bowl since 2025.

"I think it brings out the best in me having responsibility and a really clear role. I love taking the first over and trying to set the team up. And coming back at the death… it definitely brings the best out of me" – England's Lauren Bell on her top-tail role.

"It's a long tournament. We still have four more games. There are teams we feel we can really fight and beat. So just stick together, regroup" – Ireland skipper Gaby Lewis after the defeat to Scotland.
