History-maker Nikhil Chaudhary proudly dons Australian colours as dream turns reality

Australia's new all-rounder Nikhil Chaudhary is on cloud nine. An Indian-born Australian, he made his T20I debut against Bangladesh in the series opener on Wednesday, making history as the first India-born male cricketer in six decades to debut for Australia.

According to Cricket Australia, several players of Indian origin, including Gurinder Sandhu and Tanveer Sangha, have represented Australia. However, no India-born male cricketer had played for the national side since Gujarat-born leg-spinner Rex Sellars featured in the 1964 Test against India.

Nikhil, who represented Punjab in domestic cricket, said that ever since he took a diving catch of Soumya Sarkar in the series opener, he was sure he could manage at the international level.

"We always dream of playing for Australia and it actually happened yesterday. After that first catch, I was even more confident that I can actually do something on the international stage," said Nikhil.

"I got a call from the national selector while I was in Belgium. It was probably the best moment of my life. A couple of hours before sleeping, I got to know that I'm going to play. So I was a bit anxious."

He added that the crowd in Chattogram gave him a good welcome, reminding him of playing alongside big names like Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh in Indian domestic cricket.

In 2020, Nikhil travelled to Australia to visit his uncle and was unable to return to India due to COVID-19 border closures, which turned out to be a career-defining moment.

He began playing club cricket in Brisbane and his performances caught the attention of local coaches, including James Hopes, which led to a Big Bash contract with Hobart Hurricanes in 2023.

While pursuing his cricketing dream, Nikhil worked various jobs — chopping vegetables in restaurants, driving taxis, and delivering parcels — to support himself.

"It helps you a lot. I've probably seen worse times in my life, away from cricket. When you come into cricket which you actually love, you don't get that much anxiety or pressure."

He said adjusting to Australian culture wasn't difficult: "I think I'm closer to Australian culture than Indian culture. People here are very straightforward, which I love."

Nikhil added that he is focused on learning from Adam Zampa, calling him a guiding light for Australian spinners. "He just got 150 T20 wickets, which is not an easy thing to do. I'm going to get as much knowledge as I can from him."
