Heavyweights seek their best game yet in crucial showdown
On paper, Saturday's afternoon clash in Manchester was supposed to be the big game of Group A, one that could dictate passage to the semis for two strong World Cup contenders. But both teams – who faced off in the 50-over World Cup final only months ago – have reached this stage far from comprehensively, still shaking off early tournament jitters.
South Africa have lost to Australia, and struggled past Pakistan in a bid to gain a massive NRR advantage. India, despite two big wins, are far from their best. Concerns are aplenty: the middle order – barring Richa Ghosh – hasn't fired, No. 5 is a toss-up between Yastika Bhatia and Bharti Fulmali, and the bowling attack is without Shreyanka Patil, one of their best death operators.
Uncapped Prema Rawat, drafted as Shreyanka's replacement, had a long net session on Thursday. Bowling coach Aavishkar Salvi has backed Radha Yadav to come good if given an opportunity. Radha had a productive range-hitting session, tonking sixes over deep cover. Despite her bowling stocks declining, her record against South Africa (16 wickets at 15.81) and batting muscle at No. 8 could be useful.
South Africa have their own concerns – inability to stitch partnerships, struggles with strike rotation, and troubles against spin. Shabnim Ismail's return has added venom to their attack, but they need stronger batting contributions.
Heading into the crucial clash, there's no time to dwell on what's not working. "We can't really focus on all the bad that we've done… We know destiny is in our hands right now," Chloe Tryon said.
Recent bilateral series performances might count for little. The contest still holds its hype.

"We all know the quality Radha brings to the bowling unit. It's only a matter of getting an opportunity. She adds a different dynamic with fielding and batting. If she gets that opportunity, we are very confident she'll perform to her potential." – Aavishkar Salvi, India bowling coach
"We didn't start the competition the way we wanted to. We know what the team can bring – the brand of cricket we play is very aggressive. Probably haven't played our best cricket. Still got over the line against Pakistan, but still a little bit nervy." – Chloe Tryon, South Africa all-rounder
