Kapp shines with bat and ball as South Africa down India by six wickets
South Africa pulled off their highest successful chase in T20 World Cup history to keep their campaign alive with a six-wicket win over India in Manchester. Marizanne Kapp led the way with her all-round brilliance, taking 2-27 with the ball to restrict India to 158 before anchoring the chase with a composed, unbeaten 81—her maiden T20 World Cup fifty—to guide South Africa home with five balls to spare.
India's innings began with aggressive intent, as Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma capitalised on the Powerplay to race to 59/2. However, the momentum was disrupted by the South African new-ball bowlers, who struck once each in the Powerplay to remove both Indian openers. India then failed to capitalise on that bright start.
While contributions came from all across the middle and lower order, India struggled to sustain partnerships. Losing wickets at regular intervals prevented them from capitalising on their strong start as a breakthrough for South Africa was never far. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, playing her 200th T20I, contributed 24, while Deepti Sharma provided a late push with a useful 29 off 21 balls, but even on a slow pitch, 158 felt a few runs short.
India briefly threatened to seize control in the Powerplay with the ball. After a sedate start, Laura Wolvaardt collected a four and a six in back-to-back overs of pace. The spinners remained effective in keeping a tight leash. Shafali Verma bowled her two overs with the new ball for just nine, while Shree Charani broke through with a double-wicket maiden, catching Wolvaardt off her own bowling and cleaning up Annerie Dercksen one ball later.
At 25/2 after the Powerplay, the game pivoted on a 97-run partnership between Kapp and Tazmin Brits, making her first appearance this World Cup. Deepti Sharma and debutant leg-spinner Prema Rawat proved a tad expensive in the middle overs, allowing the third-wicket pair to catch up. Kapp repeatedly targeted her Delhi Capitals teammates, striking two boundaries off Charani in the 13th over before hitting three more off Arundhati Reddy—the last of them bringing up a 34-ball fifty.
South Africa required 37 off the last four overs. Verma broke through, sending Brits on her way. Kapp retaliated with a six, before Charani leaked a couple of boundaries in her final over. Even with the precious wicket of Nadine de Klerk sandwiched in between, Charani's brilliant spell of 3-24 ended with an expensive over that proved detrimental. India turned to Deepti for the penultimate over; Kapp slammed two sixes to seal South Africa's highest chase in Women's T20 World Cups.
Brief Scores: India 158/7 in 20 overs (Shafali Verma 31, Deepti Sharma 29; Marizanne Kapp 2-27, Shabnim Ismail 2-28) lost to South Africa 161/4 in 19.1 overs (Marizanne Kapp 81*, Tazmin Brits 40; Shree Charani 3-24, Shafali Verma 1-22) by 6 wickets.
