Nitish Reddy out of Ireland and England T20Is with quadriceps injury

Nitish Reddy has been ruled out of India's T20I series against Ireland and England with a quadriceps injury. The 23-year-old all-rounder had been selected in both the ODI and T20I squads for the tour of the UK, with Suryansh Shedge named as his replacement for the two T20I series.

Reddy featured in two ODIs in the recently concluded home series against Afghanistan, claiming his maiden wickets in the format. He missed the second ODI due to "some issues with his quad," as captain Shubman Gill revealed at the toss. Reddy returned for the final ODI, bowling six wicketless overs for 42 runs.

"Nitish reported left quadriceps discomfort after the third ODI against Afghanistan on June 20. Following a subsequent medical assessment, the BCCI Medical Team has recommended a period of rehabilitation, ruling him out of both T20I series," a BCCI media release stated. It remains unclear if Reddy will be fit for the ODIs against England starting July 14.

The injury is the latest in a string of fitness setbacks over the past year. Concerns over his fitness significantly limited his bowling during IPL 2025, when he delivered just five overs across 13 matches. He was later ruled out midway through India's Test tour of England due to a knee injury.

During IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling coach James Franklin noted Reddy's efforts to improve fitness, including increased bowling workload and pace. This injury comes at an unfortunate time as he appeared to be building momentum.

Shedge earned the call-up following impressive performances for India 'A' in the tri-series in Sri Lanka, scoring 147 runs in five matches and bowling 23 overs. He was also a standout performer for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, scoring 131 runs at a strike rate of 251.92. He aggregated 158 runs from seven matches at a strike rate of 175.56 for Punjab Kings in IPL 2026.
