A Tale of Two Potential Debuts

As heavy build-up surrounds the potential international debut of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in Belfast, another Indian-born cricketer is also tipped to make his debut on Friday — but for the rival camp.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

The 15-year-old teenage sensation has become a rockstar in Belfast. Reports suggest the ECB will provide a separate changing room for him, as ICC and ECB regulations prohibit under-16s from using adult changing rooms.

Rajasthan Royals management, currently in London for a season review, may travel to Belfast for his potential debut. Cricket Ireland may add temporary stands to increase stadium capacity from 4,200 to 7,000.

"There is a lot of excitement here in Belfast and Ireland. The Indian team is always popular, and this time the craze is more because of Sooryavanshi. I hear many Indians from European countries will be here," said MV Narasimha Rao, who played for both India and Ireland.

Jai Moondra

The 29-year-old left-arm seamer, considered the quickest bowler from Leinster, is expected to feature in the opening game. A native of Tonk, Rajasthan, Moondra moved to Ireland in 2021 for a Master's degree.

Originally a batter who bowled left-arm spin, he transitioned to pace bowling over time. He has played one first-class match, six List A games, and five T20s.

"To play international cricket was always a dream. Playing against India is another class of feeling — to perform against one of the best teams in the world would be something special," Moondra said.

If he debuts, Moondra joins Indian-origin players who've represented Ireland, including Raman Lamba, Simi Singh, and Robin Waters (born in Kolkata). Waters was part of the Ireland side that bowled out West Indies for 25 in 1969, and was also the driver in a 1961 accident that cost Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi vision in one eye.

Other Notes

Kapil Dev once played club cricket in Northern Ireland but not for the national team. Bobby Rao will ring the Roy Torrens Bell at Stormont on Sunday to start the match. Rao hopes India bat first and Sooryavanshi makes his debut.
