We got out of same situation last year: Shafali Verma
"A tough situation is one that has never come in your life before."
On the eve of the must-win clash against Bangladesh, Shafali Verma turned philosophical. One loss to South Africa and India's World Cup hopes are on a knife's edge. But the team has been here before.
"Yesterday, in the huddle, Harman di told us that it's not like we've never been in this situation before," Shafali revealed. "We came into this same situation last year and got out of it. We had accepted this situation in ODIs and we won. So we know that now we have to win these two matches. This time also we'll just go and see what we did at that time, the things we executed well."
One noticeable change since the loss to South Africa is how chirpy the players have become in training. On Wednesday at the nets, they constantly egged each other on—whether bowlers cheering pacers or batters they were bowling to. It was the loudest the team has been in the nets throughout this campaign.
"Whenever we have a bad day as a team, we know every player's morale will be down. But the next day, we have to come together, unite and motivate each other," Shafali added. "We'll go day by day. Today we'll only think about practice; then we'll see tomorrow about the game. Everyone is very mature. I don't think they'll let that situation happen again in this World Cup."
On the constant chopping and changing of the side: "You're playing the World Cup – anyone can get a chance. If you don't perform well, then of course you'll sit out."
With India likely needing to win every game from hereon while keeping Net Run Rate in mind, Shafali is sure about one thing: "We are all backing each other, whether someone is sitting out or playing. We all think we have to win the match."
