Clinical New Zealand wrap up resounding win to clinch series

New Zealand put on a clinical display on the final morning at Trent Bridge to bowl England out for 212, securing a comprehensive 160-run victory and clinching the series 2-1.

On a day heavily overshadowed by Ben Stokes' sudden international retirement announcement, England's hopes of chasing down a formidable target quickly evaporated under overcast skies. Despite a spirited, lower-order reanimation led by Jamie Smith's resilient half-century, the visitors ruthlessly chipped away at the remaining wickets to spoil the captain's swansong and register a historic series win on British soil.

Resuming from their overnight score of 103/4, England needed another 270 runs, but the batting order collapsed around a single substantial stand involving half-centurion Jamie.

Joe Root fetched a boundary each in the first two overs, but a double blow in the third over firmly nudged the game in New Zealand's favor. Nathan Smith struck first as Tom Blundell took a sharp low catch behind the stumps to send Emilio Gay back for just 10. Later in that same over, a brilliant piece of fielding by Henry Nicholls resulted in Root being run out for 18, leaving the hosts in a deep spot of bother at 116/6.

Jamie was then joined by Gus Atkinson, who played the perfect second fiddle as the duo stitched together a crucial 75-run stand to keep New Zealand at bay for over an hour. Jamie continued finding the boundaries, particularly taking on Nathan Smith and Mitchell Santner. However, Atkinson's patient 70-ball vigil ended in the minutes leading up to Lunch when Santner trapped him plumb in front of the stumps for 19.

New Zealand needed just three more wickets on the other side of the break to seal the match. Nathan kept chipping away at the English lower order, removing Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue in quick succession, while Jamie brought up his half-century with the first of three consecutive boundaries off Santner.

The left-arm spinner eventually had the last laugh. After being a tad expensive on Day 5 against Jamie's counterattack, Santner wrapped up the match with Jamie's dismissal for a fighting 60. Jamie was the final wicket to fall, bundling England out for 212 and sealing a monumental victory for the visitors.
