Kaia ton leads Zimbabwe charge as hosts tighten grip on Day 2

Innocent Kaia matched Bangladesh's first-innings total of 140 before half-centuries from Brian Bennett, Craig Ervine and Wessly Madhevere powered Zimbabwe to a healthy lead of 270 on Day 2 of the one-off Test in Harare. Captain Richard Ngarava then picked up the lone Bangladeshi wicket to fall before Stumps as the hosts strengthened their grip, despite Taijul Islam's 7-fer.

Zimbabwe resumed on 136/1, and Kaia took them into the lead with a boundary. Brendon Taylor fell to Khaled Ahmed for 17, edging behind. Khaled was Bangladesh's most effective bowler, even extracting movement with the old ball. He nearly had Bennett dragging on early, but the rest of the bowlers couldn't pose enough questions.

Kaia and Bennett punished the bad balls with positive intent. Kaia raised his maiden Test ton in just his third appearance, heaving Ebadot Hossain to the midwicket boundary. Bennett used his feet effectively against left-arm spinner Taijul, relying on exquisite timing en route to his third Test fifty as the lead swelled past 100 by Lunch.

Bennett chipped one back to Taijul in the first over after Lunch, ending on 59. Zimbabwe then lost two wickets in three deliveries: Kaia found short cover while turning through leg-side, and Tafadzwa Tsiga was run out after responding late to Ervine's call. Ervine, who began with a flurry of boundaries, pounced on Taijul for a four and a six before staying watchful against the new ball alongside Madhevere. Both reached their fifties and raised a 100-run stand.

Ervine tried to switch gears but swept to deep backward square leg. Taijul then dismissed Brad Evans leg before, took Newman Nyamhuri for his fifth wicket and 300th international scalp, and castled both Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani. Zimbabwe were bowled out for 410, with Madhevere stranded on an unbeaten 76.

Bangladesh played out a tricky nine-over passage before Stumps with intent, managing just three boundaries. Mahmudul Hasan Joy ran well between the wickets and remained unbeaten on 21. Shadman Islam fell to Ngarava, while Mominul Haque was unbeaten on 9, with the visitors ending 230 runs away from forcing a fourth innings.

Brief Scores: Bangladesh 140 & 40/1 (Mahmudul Hasan Joy 21*, Mominul Haque 9*) trail Zimbabwe 410 (Innocent Kaia 140, Wessly Madhevere 76*, Craig Ervine 60; Taijul Islam 7-138) by 230 runs.
