India eye redemption against settled England

It hasn't been an ideal start to Shreyas Iyer's T20I captaincy as India suffered a humbling 2-0 defeat to Ireland. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate admitted "disbelief" was the first emotion after watching his side fail to adapt to the conditions in Belfast. The trip to England presents a chance for redemption – but also a much tougher test. England, meanwhile, enter the series in the shadow of their Test defeat to New Zealand and Ben Stokes' shock retirement. Stokes has backed Harry Brook as England's next Test captain, adding expectation on the young skipper for this five-match T20I series.

India's batting order failed spectacularly against Ireland. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma both fell for golden ducks in the second game, while Ishan Kishan and Iyer also struggled. The bowling showed encouraging signs – debutant Prince Yadav impressed, Harshit Rana looked sharp, and Arshdeep Singh was solid.

As ten Doeschate noted, India may have become too accustomed to their boundary-heavy approach and struggled when conditions demanded a different method. A quicker tactical reset is needed against tougher opposition.

England return to T20I cricket for the first time since their seven-run semifinal defeat to India at the T20 World Cup, where Jacob Bethell's century went in vain. They've won nine of their 11 T20Is this year, but that heartbreaking loss lingers. Jos Buttler rediscovered form during the IPL, while Will Jacks has looked sharp in the T20 Blast. With Brook, Salt, Buttler, Curran, Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer forming the core, England remain a settled outfit.

When: Wednesday, July 1 at 5:30 PM Local Time (10:00 PM IST)

Where: Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street

What to expect: The last men's T20I here saw England defend 188 against West Indies. In this season's T20 Blast, Yorkshire's 151 is the highest total at the venue, while Durham's 93 all out is the lowest. Results are evenly split between batting first and chasing. Rain is forecast through the evening.

England Playing XI: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (wk), Harry Brook (c), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Adil Rashid, Luke Wood, Saqib Mahmood

India Probable XI: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan (wk), Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy

  • India last lost three consecutive T20Is in 2021 (four in a row – two to Sri Lanka, one each to Pakistan and New Zealand at the 2021 T20 World Cup)
  • England haven't beaten India in a bilateral series across formats since 2019

Shreyas Iyer on whether 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will debut: "You never know what is going to happen. Our hands are tied. This is private, discussed in the team. He is a brilliant prodigy and whenever he gets an opportunity, he will do brilliantly."

Brendon McCullum on workload management: "We look at the workload some of our boys have had in this Test and work out the right balance. You can't do anything about the scheduling. The good thing is we've got strong options within our squads."
