Pandya trade far more layered as MI, CSK deny talks are on the table
The much-debated Hardik Pandya trade is not as straightforward as it is being projected. It is layered and nuanced, if not downright complicated.
On Wednesday, both Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, who were reportedly at an advanced stage of discussions over a possible Pandya trade, categorically denied that any such proposal was on their respective tables.
"We have not taken any decision, and it is definitely not on the table as yet. We are aware which player is up for trade and we will discuss it once we complete our review of the season, which will only be after the ongoing MLC. There is still a lot of time for that," CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told Cricbuzz.
Mumbai Indians were even more categorical and forthright. "Currently we are not engaged in conversations with regard to player trades, the same is only possible once the review is complete," a spokesperson for the franchise said.
As predicted by Cricbuzz on multiple occasions, the franchise began its season review in right earnest immediately after the AGM of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), its parent company. This year's review is expected to be more thorough and holistic than in previous seasons. Any decision on a potential trade involving Pandya will be taken only after every aspect of the review has been examined.
"We have just begun our post season review and will look into all aspects of the team. As with any review of this nature, a range of options and ideas will be evaluated before any decisions are made with regard to players," the MI spokesperson further said.
This is, however, not to suggest that the franchise will not trade Pandya at all – only that it is in no hurry to make a decision. Cricbuzz understands that discussions of some sort have taken place between Pandya and the MI management, the details of which would not be disclosed by either party. What is known, however, is that the franchise will seek the views of the coaches too on the matter.
Each member of the existing support staff – primarily the coaches – had been asked to submit a report on the just-concluded season. Those reports are currently being reviewed, and the performance of every coach will also come under assessment. So in conclusion, several key decisions remain to be taken before Pandya is placed on the trading block, if at all. The situation is more layered than it appears.
The options before Mumbai Indians are, of course, plenty. Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings could all emerge as interested parties. The real question, however, is whether Mumbai Indians will be satisfied with the return package.
