Mooney powers Australia to seventh T20 World Cup crown
Australia claimed a record-extending seventh T20 World Cup title, chasing down 151 with seven wickets and 2.5 overs to spare. The undefeated campaign broke their long-standing drought on UK shores and ended England's historic home-soil success.
After opting to bowl first, Australia's disciplined attack kept England in check on a tricky surface. Lucy Hamilton claimed her maiden T20 World Cup wicket, removing Amy Jones early. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge rebuilt cautiously, but Annabel Sutherland struck before the Powerplay ended with England at 39/2.
Alice Capsey provided England's only real momentum, smashing 23 off 20 balls before falling to Sophie Molineux. Heather Knight followed soon after, trapped LBW by Kim Garth.
Freya Kemp then rescued England with an explosive unbeaten 44 off 28 balls, adding 80 with Sciver-Brunt (58*). England managed 57 off the final six overs to reach 150/4.
Australia raced to 62/1 in the Powerplay. Beth Mooney (64) and Phoebe Litchfield (48) added a match-defining 100-run partnership in 67 balls, maintaining a run-rate near 10. Litchfield fell with 34 needed, but Mooney sealed victory by smashing three boundaries in the 14th over.
Brief scores: England 150/4 (Sciver-Brunt 58*, Kemp 44*; Garth 1-20, Hamilton 1-19) lost to Australia 153/3 (Mooney 64, Litchfield 48; Dean 1-28) by 7 wickets.
