Spotlight shifts from Sooryavanshi to India's mounting concerns

With Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's long-awaited debut behind them, the spotlight has shifted back to India's cricket. The defending world champions have endured a turbulent start after their World Cup triumph. Their captain has been replaced, the Player of the Tournament is on the bench, and victories have dried up.

Shreyas Iyer remains winless after four games at the helm, having lost nine of his last ten completed T20s as captain. India's repeated struggles away from home have renewed concerns over the batting group's ability to adapt to less stroke-friendly conditions.

Tactical decisions backfired too. Opting to bat was based on the assumption the surface would remain consistent. Playing three spinners forced Iyer to bowl Ravi Bishnoi at the death, an over that cost 29 and swung the contest in England's favour.

Reeling from a historic series loss to Ireland and 1-0 down, India have their backs against the wall.

England also have questions to answer. Ben Stokes' retirement leaves Harry Brook as the leading Test captaincy candidate. A series victory over India would validate Brook's appointment and the ECB's belief in him and Brendon McCullum across formats.

When: Tuesday, 7 July 2026 at 5:30 PM LOCAL / 10:00 PM IST

Where: Trent Bridge, Nottingham

What to expect: A high-scoring venue favouring chasers. 11 of the last 15 T20s here since 2025 have been won by the chasing side, with the average first innings winning total at 191.

England (unchanged XI): Philip Salt, Jos Buttler (wk), Harry Brook (c), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Josh Tongue

India (probable XI): Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wk), Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Harshit Rana, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar/Prince Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy

  • Axar Patel became the first Indian spinner to reach 100 T20I wickets in the previous game
  • England won the only T20I between the sides at this venue (2022)

Quote – Sitanshu Kotak (India batting coach): "Ever since Vaibhav came into the team, he was ready to debut… From our point of view, the only thing we've told him is whatever his game, his instinct, the way he plays to get here, he should stick to the same style of cricket."
