Matthew Tromp: Inside the rise of the Knight Riders' new 'star boy'

"Don't worry. Just come. I'm going big tonight."

Brett Tromp had just told his son that the last-minute return flight from Austin to Dallas would cost close to $800. Matthew's reply left little room for hesitation.

By the time Los Angeles Knight Riders were reduced to 17/2, Brett was in the stands. Matthew walked in and produced the innings he had promised, striking his maiden Major League Cricket half-century with four sixes and two fours to drag LAKR out of early trouble.

That certainty had been forged months earlier and nearly 7,000 miles away during a gruelling six-month stint in New Zealand club cricket.

For all his obvious talent, Tromp had reached something of a crossroads after last year's MLC. Across three seasons and two franchises, he had played just seven matches. Living in Austin did little to accelerate that journey. Away from the brief MLC window, there was no sustained high-performance environment.

It became apparent that if Tromp wanted to find out where his game truly stood, he needed to step outside the comfort of American cricket. That opportunity arrived through his agent, and former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, who helped secure a place with Sydenham Cricket Club in Christchurch's premier competition. He left for New Zealand in October and spent the next six months playing T20, one-day and two-day cricket.

The experience proved transformative. This was the first prolonged period Tromp had spent away from his family. Joshua accompanied him but played for a different club. Tromp stayed with a couple in a modest two-bedroom house, shared a bathroom, had no work visa, no car and little disposable income. On the field, the cricket was demanding. He had to switch between formats almost weekly, tighten his technique for longer innings and learn that batting in two-day cricket required patience.

The summer unfolded better than Tromp could have imagined. He finished as the leading run-scorer across Christchurch premier cricket and was named Batsman of the Year. He struck a match-winning century in the T20 knockout stages, followed it up with another hundred while battling flu, and helped the club lift two of the three trophies. His performances left such an impression that a return to New Zealand could pave the way towards a potential state contract.

Tromp and his twin brother Joshua had arrived in America from South Africa in 2022 after representing Gauteng at Under-16 level. Both were gifted multi-sport athletes, with golf, field hockey and tennis forming part of their upbringing.

Tromp picked up in MLC where he had left off in Christchurch. His juggernaut rolled on with back-to-back scores of 58 not out, 49, 50 and 44, powering LAKR to the playoffs for the first time. The defining innings came against TSK – it was Fleming who had helped facilitate Tromp's move to Christchurch, and Tromp's unbeaten 58 marred the former New Zealand captain's farewell match as Super Kings coach.

Los Angeles Knight Riders had won just four of their first 16 matches across three seasons. Tromp's rise coincided with the arrival of Shane Watson, whose influence on young cricketers had already become well established. Watson spent considerable time with Tromp, both on and off the field.

"He's a highly skilled young man," Watson said. "I was blown away seeing the incredible batting skill that he has. To be able to see that unlocked, getting an opportunity up the order and taking down some of the best bowlers in the world, it's no surprise. It's super exciting, not just for LAKR but for USA Cricket as well."

After one innings, Kieron Pollard walked over to Tromp and told him "That is some serious hitting, young man. I'm very proud of you."

Tromp's emergence has not gone unnoticed among the Knight Riders faithful. Reddit threads and fan forums in India have been awash with praise, with many supporters already hailing him as the franchise's newest "star boy". If this trajectory continues, seeing Tromp in the iconic purple and gold of Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens may not be too far away.
