The end may not be Rohit's to script

Whether or not Rohit Sharma retires after the Lord's ODI on Sunday (July 19), it will not be entirely his choice. Given the option, the only ODI batter with multiple double hundreds would want to continue pursuing his dream of winning the 2027 World Cup, but he is no longer in control of his career or the narrative around him.

The latest retirement talk suggests discussions may have taken place about his international future, particularly due to his dwindling returns — just 241 runs in eight innings at an average of 30.12 and a strike rate of 88.60, with only one half-century.

Compare that to Yashasvi Jaiswal's 230 runs in three games. There is cricketing logic in the selectors' thinking that Jaiswal cannot be kept out, especially with the 2027 World Cup in mind. But can both be in the squad, with Rohit as the third opener behind Jaiswal and Shubman Gill?

Sources have told Cricbuzz that discussions between Rohit and the selectors are not recent — they took place some time ago, with head coach Gautam Gambhir also in the loop. Rohit was in no mood to relent and has spoken to BCCI officials about the matter.

Those close to Rohit say he has never hidden his desire to play in the 2027 World Cup in Africa. Two versions have emerged: one says he wants to continue; another says he is troubled by the selectors' and head coach's attitude and may eventually step aside so as not to block a youngster.

Whether or not the Lord's ODI is his final match, it may not be his choice. Such an exit would be a sad end for one of India's finest ODI batters, who was stripped of the captaincy after leading India to the Champions Trophy title.

Meanwhile, the BCCI was reportedly unhappy that the information leaked and sent a note to selectors asking them not to speak to the media. But this may be speculation — much like the talk around Rohit's retirement. Or perhaps all of it is true.
