Dean named England captain for Ireland ODIs

Charlie Dean will captain England in their three-match ODI series against Ireland in September. Dean previously led the side during the ODI series against New Zealand when Nat Sciver-Brunt was unavailable through injury.

England have left out several established names for the series. Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge are managing their fitness and recovery, while Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Amy Jones have not been picked.

Alice Capsey is set to take the wicketkeeping gloves in Jones' absence. Grace Potts and Kira Chathli are the two uncapped players in the squad, while Charis Pavely, who has played two T20Is, is in line to make her first ODI appearance.

England squad: Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey (wk), Kira Chathli, Tilly Corteen-Coleman, Charlie Dean (c), Sophia Dunkley, Lauren Filer, Dani Gibson, Jodi Grewcock, Freya Kemp, Ryana MacDonald-Gay, Charis Pavely, Grace Potts, Mady Villiers, Issy Wong.

Ryana MacDonald-Gay has been recalled after overcoming the lower-back problem that kept her out last year. Tilly Corteen-Coleman is also part of the squad, with the left-arm spinner looking to add to her two ODI caps.

Head coach Charlotte Edwards said the series would allow England to shift focus back to the 50-over format following a year heavily centred on T20 cricket. "The focus has rightly been on T20 cricket for much of this year, but with a memorable run to the ICC Women's T20 World Cup final now behind us, this is a chance for players to display their 50-over skills and bank some valuable experience for the future," said Edwards.

"We have got plenty of exciting and talented cricketers in our game and this is an opportunity for some of them to push themselves further forward by hopefully contributing to England victories and putting pressure on future selection," the England coach added.

The opening ODI will be played on September 1 in Leicester, followed by the second ODI in Derby on September 3. The third and final ODI will be held in Worcester on September 6.
