Root 'really hacked off and disappointed' after Carse nightclub incident

England captain Joe Root is "really hacked off and disappointed" at Brydon Carse, the fast bowler under investigation for an incident outside a nightclub in Derby.

Root, just weeks into his second stint as full-time Test captain, spoke about the frustration of dealing with "stupid mistakes" outside the field, after Carse was removed from the England Test squad for the second Pakistan Test, beginning Thursday (August 27).

Carse is under investigation by the Cricket Regulator upon the ECB's referral, after footage of him being handcuffed appeared on social media. He was replaced in the squad by Sonny Baker.

"If I'm being brutally honest, I'm really hacked off, I'm really disappointed," Root said in a press conference on Tuesday (August 25).

"After last week's performance, we're sat here and we're talking about something that is not related to it at all."

Carse did not feature in the XI that won the first Test by an innings and 103 runs against Pakistan, and was released to represent Durham in the County Championship. The incident is said to have taken place in the aftermath of their win over Derbyshire last week.

"I've spoken to Brydon, and when I first found out my main concern was him as a person," Root said.

"I don't think I'm speaking out of turn by saying he's very upset, very apologetic and understands his actions. I'm sure that when he gets his chance he will say that himself.

"But I don't think it's the isolated incident itself, it's the fact we keep making stupid mistakes away from the game and it's detracting from what we're doing on the field."

The incident puts into spotlight the England team's drinking culture, something which former captain Ben Stokes recently said was "embedded" in their cricket. As one of his first acts upon reappointment, Root clarified that there will be no midnight curfews in the team, urging his players to act as responsible adults.

In June, Stokes and Gus Atkinson were involved in an incident at nightclub, for which both were suspended for one game. Stokes subsequently retired from international cricket, bringing Root back at the helm. The skipper admitted the recent past has not been "a good look", saying it is the responsibility of the players to earn the trust of the public back.

"It's our responsibility to change that. I see the dressing room every day and how we operate around cricket and it's very impressive.

"But at the same time, I can understand why we are viewed in a certain way and in a certain light at the moment".

"That's what lies ahead of us, to change that. I just think, if we don't put ourselves in certain situations, it's not something we will have to worry about."
