Melbourne Stars Get First Win of 2024-25 BBL Season

Stars' Pace Attack Sets Up Win Over Brisbane Heat

Melbourne Stars' pace attack cashed in on bowling-friendly conditions at the Gabba to secure their first win of the 2024-25 BBL season, defeating Brisbane Heat by five wickets.

Counterattacking Fifties from Lawrence and Stoinis

Dan Lawrence (64* off 38) and Marcus Stoinis (62 off 48) played crucial roles in the Stars' win, stitching a fluent 132-run stand to all but kill the game. Stoinis brought up his maiden fifty as captain of the Stars.

Heat's Innings Struggles

Brisbane Heat's innings struggled for momentum due to the bowling-friendly conditions, with the ball still hooping around even past the 10-over mark. Max Bryant (77* off 48) propped up the Heat's innings with a one-man show, but the total was at least 20 runs short of a competitive score.

Stars' Pace Attack Shines

The Stars' pace attack, led by Mark Steketee (2-42), caused problems for the Heat's batsmen, making the total of 149 seem a lot more than it was. Xavier Bartlett (4-10) and Spencer Johnson (1-28) also breathed fire with the new-ball pair.

Brief Scores

  • Brisbane Heat: 149/7 in 20 overs (Max Bryant 77*)
  • Melbourne Stars: 153-5 in 18.1 overs (Dan Lawrence 64*, Marcus Stoinis 62)
