Can Litton Das fix Bangladesh's middle-over dilemma in the ODIs?

Bangladesh's batting unit has been struggling to maintain a consistent tempo in the middle overs, a period that has become crucial in modern ODI cricket. The team's inability to post big scores has been attributed to their failure to adapt to the new batting philosophy, which emphasizes scoring runs in the middle overs.

According to Habibul Bashar, the chief selector, Bangladesh needs to upgrade their batting standards in the middle overs to stay competitive. He emphasized the importance of taking the game away in the middle overs, as every team plans accordingly.

Najmul Hossain, the ODI captain, acknowledged that the conditions at home are not conducive to prepare players for high-scoring games. However, he believes that regular exposure to good wickets will help the team develop the habit of scoring big runs.

The team is currently going through a transitional period, with several key members retiring recently. The absence of experienced players like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah has left a void in the middle order. Khaled Mahmud, a former player, suggested that Litton Kumar Das could be a good option to fill this gap, citing his experience and aggressive batting style.

Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons emphasized the importance of consistently scoring runs in the middle overs, and did not rule out the possibility of Litton playing in the middle order in ODIs.

Key Quotes:

  • "Since that rule of having only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle from overs 11 to 40 overs was introduced, cricket has changed a lot. Now, it is controlled in the middle overs." – Habibul Bashar
  • "The way international cricket is going, the ODI game is played with an eye on 300 to 350 runs. But we have to understand our strength and what kind of facilities we receive and in what kind of wickets we grew up playing cricket." – Najmul Hossain
  • "I think Litton can be a good number four as he plays spin very well but whether he agrees to that is something you also need to see because he likes to open." – Khaled Mahmud
