CWI Seeks Right to Decide West Indies Olympic Representation
The Cricket West Indies (CWI) has written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to express its desire to decide which team represents the West Indies in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
Background
The Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028 will feature six teams in both men's and women's categories. The methodology for selecting these teams has not been finalized, with the ICC set to determine the process.
CWI's Stand
CWI CEO Chris Dehring explained that if the ICC uses a ranking system to select teams, and the West Indies men's team is ranked 5th, the CWI would like to choose which country represents the West Indies at the Olympics.
CWI's Proposal
The CWI has outlined two inclusive and practical qualification pathways that would enable Caribbean nations to participate in Olympic cricket. The board is committed to constructive dialogue with the ICC and welcomes the opportunity to work together in shaping a qualification process that respects both the Olympic ethos and the realities of cricket in the Caribbean.
Caribbean Nations
There are 15 nations/territories under the aegis of the West Indies, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Similar Situation for UK
A similar situation will arise for the United Kingdom, with constituents England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland potentially competing for Olympic representation.
