Indian Cricket Team Selection for England Tour
Selectors Bet on Long-term Vision
Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar has asserted that the selection of Tamil Nadu batter Sai Sudharsan for the upcoming tour of England is not based on his IPL performances. Sudharsan is one of the two players, along with Arshdeep Singh, to receive their maiden Test call-up.
Sudharsan's Selection
Sudharsan is currently leading the Orange Cap race in the IPL and has shown terrific red-ball skills. He has a solid technique, temperament, and composure, which has caught the selectors' attention. Despite his limited red-ball experience, Sudharsan is expected to be in the starting XI, unless the touring team management opts to give Abhimanyu Easwaran the initial opportunity.
Karun Nair's Second Wind
Karun Nair, 33, is experiencing a second wind in his career, and the selectors have shown faith in the right-handed batter. He is expected to feature in the playing XI for most of the five Tests in England, along with Sudharsan.
Arshdeep Singh's Inclusion
Arshdeep Singh, a left-arm pacer, brings a different dynamic to the attack with his ability to seam and swing the ball. His inclusion is a bold decision by the selectors, especially when Harshit Rana was widely considered the frontrunner for the fifth specialist pace bowler's slot.
Shubman Gill's Captaincy
The biggest punt by the selectors is the elevation of Gill as skipper ahead of experienced and seniors like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul. Gill's deputy is Pant, who has been one of the best batters in Test cricket over the last four-five years.
Selectors' Long-term Vision
The selectors are taking a calculated punt on players like Sudharsan, Nair, and Arshdeep, who have demonstrated solid technique, temperament, and composure. They are looking at all sorts of scenarios over the next two years, with the aim of building a team leading up to the WTC final.
