BCB President Change Due to Performance, Says Bangladesh's Sports Advisor
Bangladesh's sports advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has revealed that the recent leadership change at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was entirely based on performance. The decision to replace president Faruque Ahmed with former national captain Aminul Islam Bulbul was aimed at halting the decline of cricket.
"We had certain expectations from the cricket board. Unfortunately, we did not see development matching those expectations. The state of cricket is deteriorating day by day. I cannot let cricket sink under my watch," Asif said.
The advisor revealed that serious concerns emerged following reports of mismanagement during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), which allegedly implicated Faruque Ahmed. A fact-finding committee reported numerous irregularities during the tournament, including administrative lapses that led to financial strain and government intervention to cover unpaid expenses, including player salaries.
"We didn't find any evidence of corruption, but the BPL report made it clear there were significant administrative failures. In such situations, the performance of the leadership must be assessed," Asif said.
The change in leadership comes after eight out of nine BCB directors nominated by the NSC submitted a no-confidence motion against Faruque Ahmed. "Like in cricket, you need a team to function. At BCB, there was no team. Directors were not comfortable working with him. This is not about removing someone in disgrace. It's about performance. Like a player gets dropped for repeated failures, administrators must also be assessed," he said.
Asif maintained that the change in leadership had been communicated to the ICC and was welcomed by the global governing body. He also said Aminul's appointment is not necessarily permanent, with the next BCB election tentatively scheduled for October.
