Shubman Gill retires hurt with suspected sprained neck

India captain Shubman Gill retired hurt during the morning session on day two in Kolkata after suffering a suspected neck sprain.

Gill came to bat after the drinks break, following the dismissal of Washington Sundar by Simon Harmer. Facing Harmer, Gill defended his first ball and then attempted a slog sweep on the next delivery, hitting a four but immediately showing signs of discomfort.

He clutched the back of his neck and appeared unable to move his head freely. The physio attended to him, and after a brief assessment, Gill walked off the field retired hurt. Rishabh Pant replaced him at the crease.
