Harmanpreet stresses on Powerplay as key to T20 World Cup success

"Obviously. I'll definitely rate this team as favourites," Harmanpreet Kaur boasted after the squad announcement for the upcoming T20 World Cup, on Saturday. "The team we have finalised today has the calibre to become champions. No pressure or extra burden or over-confidence."

The admission came despite a 1-4 series loss against South Africa. Chief selector Amita Sharma noted efforts to strengthen the bowling department.

"We lacked a bit in the bowling department," Amita said. "We were not able to take wickets. We have added two bowlers to take early wickets."

Harmanpreet brushed aside concerns. "In T20, bowlers have a hard job. South Africa was the only series where our bowlers could not click. I would not judge our players on one series alone."

Performance in the Powerplay would be key. "T20 Powerplays are really important. We have to target runs while batting and wickets while bowling. The Powerplay sets the tone. Also the middle order. We will work on all these aspects."

On the absence of injured Amanjot Kaur, Amita said: "It's difficult to replace Amanjot because she covered all three departments. We still have high hopes."

Harmanpreet added: "Amanjot was our key player. It was difficult to find someone to take her place. We are trying with Bharti Fulmali and we also have Radha Yadav."

She backed Jemimah Rodrigues after her lean run in South Africa (82 runs in five innings). "Batting order is settled now. Jemimah is one-down. She will be back after a dip, I am confident."

On other picks: "Bharti has proven herself in domestic and WPL. She is a perfect fit for No. 6/7. Nandni Sharma is a proven performer in WPL and among the top wicket-takers."

India face Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Netherlands in the group stage. "All matches are important. Any team can beat anyone. We have to prepare well, go in with a positive mindset and execute on a particular day."
