The spin switch that has revived CSK's flailing campaign

The success of Chennai Super Kings has often been intertwined with the effectiveness of their spin attack. While Noor Ahmad finished second in the Purple Cap race in IPL 2025, the rest of the spin attack underwhelmed. The exits of R Ashwin (retirement) and Ravindra Jadeja (trade) left a significant void in the Indian spin department.

The acquisition of Akeal Hosein has helped plug that gap. Introduced into the XII only in the fourth game after three straight defeats, Hosein's inclusion has coincided with a sharp turnaround. In the five games he has played alongside Noor, CSK have won four, including away victories in Mumbai and Delhi.

The shift is stark. Until the day before their fourth game, CSK ranked last across key bowling metrics. Since Hosein's introduction, they have surged to pole position in average, strike rate, and economy, and second by one wicket to Gujarat Titans.

Hosein's impact has been most pronounced in the Powerplay. CSK managed just two wickets in their first three matches in this phase at an average of 96.50 and economy rate of 10.72. In the next seven games, they picked up 12 wickets, second only to Gujarat Titans. Hosein himself has three Powerplay wickets, and no bowler has sent down more overs in this phase at a better economy than his 6.44. The control he brings has also created wickets at the other end.

The upfront gains have freed up Noor Ahmad. After going wicketless in the first three games, he has 11 wickets in the next seven – all in the middle overs, where he leads the season charts. With Hosein, Noor has nine wickets in five games at 14.66 (ER 7.33); without him, just two in five at 85.00 (ER 9.44). Against Delhi Capitals, the pair combined for 3/41 in seven overs to reduce them to 69/5. In contrast, Capitals' spin duo returned 1/59 in seven.

The broader impact is reflected in match outcomes. In their five wins, the collective bowling average is 18.98; in defeats, it balloons to 46.25 – a difference of 27.27, the second highest this season after Delhi Capitals. Their victories have been built on control: bowling out DC and MI after par totals, restricting KKR to 160 after making 192, the first successful defense of a sub-200 total this season.

What seemed like a campaign veering off track has been recalibrated by a resurgent bowling unit. With their spin axis now functioning in tandem, CSK have not only revived their season but also brought qualification back into view.
