KKR look to continue ascent against beleaguered DC

The pressure is mounting on Delhi Capitals as their home ground has turned into a liability. After winning their opening fixture at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, DC have lost four straight home games under varying conditions. Struggling to string together wins, they now face a resurgent Kolkata Knight Riders side that has revived its campaign with three successive wins after opening the season on a five-match losing streak.

Despite the contrast in momentum, both teams head into this clash while being in must-win territory. KKR still have five games left, including Friday's, but remain stuck in eighth place, leaving virtually no margin for error. Delhi are only slightly better off in seventh place, but having already played an extra game, their situation is equally precarious. Realistically, they need to win all four remaining matches to reach 16 points and stay alive in the playoffs race.

For DC, inconsistency has defined the season. The home conditions have offered little comfort, and vastly different tracks in a venue with high-scoring reputation has left the team struggling to adapt. On their best day they failed to defend 264, albeit with a depleted bowling attack on a batting-friendly pitch. In the very next fixture, seam-friendly conditions exposed their batting as they were bundled out for a meagre 75. Then came a spin-friendly surface where another top-order collapse restricted them to a below-par 155, forcing a batting Impact Sub and thinning their bowling options yet again.

The constant tinkering, particularly with the batting combinations, has only deepened the uncertainty. KL Rahul has been somewhat among runs in an otherwise unsettled lineup. The bowling has struggled too, especially with premier spinner Kuldeep Yadav enduring a poor season. Of the 19 spinners to have bowled at least 10 overs in IPL 2026, Kuldeep has the worst economy rate (10.36), and he's also conceded 24 sixes – the most by a bowler in the season. Under these circumstances, the bowling has leaned heavily on the experience of the overseas pacers and captain Axar Patel, who is the side's leading wicket-taker with nine wickets in 10 matches thus far.

KKR, meanwhile, have their own deep concerns with the bat, especially at the top of the order. Apart from Rinku Singh, few have contributed as consistently. Their biggest positive, however, has been Varun Chakaravarthy's return to form. His influence with the ball has been central to their revival.

With both teams fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive, the stakes could hardly be any higher. Another home defeat would push Delhi to the brink of early elimination, while KKR will view this as a chance to sustain their resurgence and pile further misery on an increasingly fragile Capitals campaign.

What to expect: Pitch no. 6 will be in use for the game, promising a lot of runs. It's the same track where DC piled up 264 against Punjab Kings, but also conceded the game.

Head to Head: KKR hold the edge over DC with 19-15 record in their 34-game rivalry. At the Arun Jaitley Stadium too, KKR lead by 6-5. Since 2022, it's been an even 3-all.

Injuries & Availability: No new injuries are reported in the DC camp, with Sahil Parakh also resuming batting in the nets.

Tactics & Matchups: Ajinkya Rahane's negative match-up against DC's spinners Kuldeep Yadav (SR 70.37, 2 dismissals) and Axar Patel (SR 123.52, 2 dismissals) makes it a battle to watch-out for. Axar, especially, hasn't shied away from bowling himself in the Powerplays.
