Gill, Rashid lead GT's demolition of Rajasthan Royals
Gujarat Titans rode their red-hot momentum to keep Rajasthan Royals winless in Jaipur with a 77-run win, their biggest ever in IPL history. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan set up a big total, before the bowlers ran through the batting lineup to catapult the Titans to second on the points table, with only net run-rate separating them from table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad.
| Phase | GT | RR |
|---|---|---|
| Overs 1-6 | 82/0 | 78/3 |
| Overs 7-15 | 84/2 | 63/5 |
| Overs 16-20 | 63/2 | 11/2 (1.3 overs) |
Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans 229/4 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 84, Sai Sudharsan 55, Washington Sundar 37*) beat Rajasthan Royals 152 in 16.3 overs (Ravindra Jadeja 38, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 36; Rashid Khan 4-22, Jason Holder 3-12, Kagiso Rabada 2-33) by 77 runs
It was another day for the Sudharsan-Gill combination, but GT's bowling sealed the contest. On a good batting strip, 230 wasn't beyond RR after another blazing Sooryavanshi start. Rabada made hay in the Powerplay, bouncing out Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shimron Hetmyer after Mohammed Siraj dismissed Sooryavanshi off the short ball. The game was alive after RR scored 78 in the Powerplay, but Rashid Khan cut the middle-order to size.
A lengthy opening over spells doom for RR
The only thing that went right for RR was the toss as Jaiswal, standing in for an injured Riyan Parag, elected to field first. Their bowling unit looked far from incisive, highlighted by an 11-ball opening over from Jofra Archer who overstepped and bowled multiple wides. Eighteen runs came off the first over as Archer was replaced in the third over.
Gill, Sudharsan make merry
Gill and Sudharsan made the most of shoddy bowling. An 82-run Powerplay marked GT's most productive phase of the season. Both batters brought up their fifties off 30 balls each.
Head coach Kumar Sangakkara's animated chat during the timeout helped tighten things up as spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Yash Raj Punja combined for 2/71 off eight overs. Gill found an able ally in Washington Sundar, who kept momentum going. Archer didn't even bowl his fourth over. Sundar and Rahul Tewatia peeled off three sixes off Tushar Deshpande's final over to finish on 229.
Sooryavanshi tees off again
Sooryavanshi struck a six off the first ball he faced from Siraj, despite jamming an inswinging yorker onto his ankle. He smashed sixes off Rabada and showed skill with a late cut, but a well-directed bumper got him.
Rashid Khan closes out the game
Dhruv Jurel attacked the pacers in the Powerplay with a 22-run over off Siraj. But Rashid cleaned up Jurel with a googly before bamboozling Donovan Ferreira with a leg-break. Rashid nabbed two more including Jadeja. Jason Holder closed it out with short-pitched deliveries as RR were bundled out inside the 17th over.
Where do the teams go next?
GT face SRH on Tuesday (May 12) in a contest that could hand the winner a foot in the playoffs. RR face Delhi Capitals in Delhi on Sunday (May 17).
